Power Rangers Battle for The Grid - Tommy Oliver (Green Ranger) Arcade Mode
To honour Jason David Frank I decided to try Power Rangers Battle for The Grid - a team-based fighting game featuring characters from all eras of the series. The story mode seems to be revolving around facing Lord Drakkon (an evil alternate version of Tommy Oliver), but after I got my ass kicked by the first fight I lowered the difficulty and decided to go for Arcade mode first. I picked the Green Ranger as my first character (which is how the game selects who is going through the arcade ladder), supported by classic Red and Lord Zed. The way the game works is you have 3 regular hit buttons - light, medium and heavy plus a special move button. Combining those with directions produces different hits and animations. You have a super meter which fills as you fight and you can use EX special moves and a super move as you'd expect. There are also throws. There's also a meter for the zord of your choice, which when activated will assist you in battle for a brief time by delivering massive attacks as you fight. Speaking of assists, you can activate assist moves for your teammates and bring them in to fight when your current character needs to recover. The controls are pretty simple and everything is easily executed, but I sometimes found the range of your attacks a bit limited and with no forward progression, making it a bit tricky to approach your enemy from the ground. The controls are simple and everything is easy to execute. That being said the AI in this game is insane. Even on Easy, they will sometimes pull 50% damage combos on you, which exposes how limited your defence options are - there are no breakers or anything else aside from a regular block. The arcade mode went well aside from a couple of really close fights. There were a couple of written lines of dialogue between Tommy and Goldar and Lord Drakkon, but that was about it in terms of his version of the Arcade mode - no ending, no special artwork not even some text talking about the character.
I can't say I'd recommend this game. Something didn't click with the mechanics and in a usual fighting game fashion it's severely lacking content. When picking a character half of the cast were locked behind DLC. The Arcade mode is bare bones. There isn't even enough flare in terms of visuals - most of the super moves are underwhelming and you don't even get a winning pose with a suitable explosion in the background. Maybe the story can provide enough content for dedicated Power Rangers fans, but I somehow doubt it. Unless you really enjoy competitive team-based fighters, I'd say give this a pass. Even then I don't think the game is very balanced, but that's just from the short time I've played.
