The next thing after the movie for this franchise was a full on TV series. You can consider this one a hard-reboot (or an alternative version, if you will) to the OVAs and the movie.
Basically the story starts over from where Keiichi makes the phone call. It is still worth watching, in my opinion, with a longer running multiple seasons of the TV format, there is more time for the story to be told, the side characters have a bigger window to develop. Also if you didn't watch the previous things relating to this it's also okay to start here you won't be missing out too much. (though me being a fan, I would obviously recommend you start in the way I uploaded it)
Although some of the themes in this anime are dated given the show's age, this is still one of the benchmark rom-coms. I suppose people will call it a harem, but this isn't one where the male character is indecisive. This is a love story propelled by the antics caused by the people related to the leading male and female. Watching the whole series may not be essential, but anyone that wishes to consider themselves well-versed in anime has to watch at least the first season. Thankfully, this is a nice, fun, innocent Slice of Life Romcom, so it's easy to swallow.
