Tesla vs Porsche Taycan, New Tesla Insurance, Walmart Solar Roof Fires
So the production version of the Porsche Taycan has been released and of course we want to see a Tesla Vs Porsche Taycan battle, it just has to be. Now of course we compare different metrics and want to find out if this now is the long awaited Tesla killer. We then also want to talk about the Tesla solar roof fires, the Tesla insurance, and the Model 3 shattering sales records in the UK.
So now that finally the production version of the Porsche Taycan and specs have been released, we of course immediately want to find out how this car fares against the competition from Tesla. We of course look at the Porsche Taycan 0-60 time, and do a Tesla Model S vs Porsche Taycan comparison. We are amazed to find that the Porsche Taycan specs vs tesla are actually not so bad, this is indeed the first time that a non-Tesla comes close to the acceleration of a Model S Performance. Of course still below, but really close. The range however is quite a lot less than the Model S, even in a Tesla Model 3 vs Porsche Taycan comparison, the Taycan would lose here. However, it has a faster charging with 270kW than Tesla currently. So is it then the Tesla Killer? We think not. Because the price is just extremely high, at least 50% more than a Model S Performance, and in the higher Turbo S version, even 85% more! And it doesn't have the supercharger network or autopilot. Nonetheless however, the Taycan is a great car, that will certainly find many buyers, and will accelerate the death of gasoline sports cars. So we absolutely welcome the Taycan and are happy that Porsche made this car!
Then, a Model S Performance is under way to the Nurburg Ring in Germany, to beat the Porsche Taycan Nurburgring time. It of course is not nice that a non Tesla car should be allowed to be faster than a Tesla. Therefore the Model S will try to beat the Taycan's lap record this week.
In other news, the Tesla insurance program has started to roll out in California, and it is 20-30% cheaper than comparable car insurances, saving the customer hundreds of dollars per year. Combine that with the much lower accident rate of Teslas, and one can imagine how much money Tesla will earn with the newly opened insurance business. Certainly much to the dismay of other car insurers!
Then of course we also have to talk about the Tesla solar panels fire currently being reported about by many news outlets. Is it FUD again? Is it really that bad? Well this time, it is not so easy to entirely dismiss it as FUD. It could indeed be that Tesla hasn't been thorough enough to check the older solar city installations, and replace older parts to meet the newest industry standards. However, we think that while not being FUD level, the story is certainly blown out of proportion. The US Fire Administration's statistics show that 8000 fires are caused on average per year in the US because of electric short-circuits, so about 1 per hour !!! Considering also that Tesla runs 400000 solar installations, 1-2 fires per year certainly doesn't seem extremely bad. It seems to be a classic case of Tesla media bias again. But to be fair, we have to say that this time, Tesla could also be at fault to some extent. To what extent exactly will have to be seen in the coming weeks, when more info comes rolling in.
And then we also want to talk about the amazing Tesla Model 3 sales in the UK, where the car has managed to surpass most of the gasoline car competition, and has even made it to the Nr.3 best selling car in August. Certainly an amazing achievement and but a taste of the coming giant EV revolution, where EVs will completely replace gasoline car in the next 10-20 years.
