Beethoven completed this quartet in 1800 while living in Vienna. This would the final quartet of his Op. 18 collection, dedicated to Beethoven’s frequent patron Joseph Franz von Lobkowitz. It is believed that the final movement of this quartet has motifs from Hadyn’s Sunrise quartet.

This work is comprised of four movements:
I. Allegro con brio
II. Adagio ma non troppo
III. Scherzo: Allegro
IV. La Malinconia: Adagio – Allegretto quasi allegro
