I SEE YOU, YOU SEE ME - Cover by KHAARTOUM - Original: KISHORE KUMAR - INDIAN FILM SONG
KHAARTOUM SINGS an ENGLISH SUBTITLED INDIAN FILM SONG: 'MAINE DEKHA TOONE DEKHA' from the 1971 HINDI FILM: 'DUSHMAN'/'ENEMY'. The SONG was ORIGINALLY SUNG by FILM SINGERS, the SOPRANO: LATA MANGESHKAR and TENOR: KISHORE KUMAR. In the FILM, the ACTRESS: MUMTAZ mimes LATA'S VOICE, and ACTOR: RAJESH KHANNA mimes the voice of KUMAR. 'DUSHMAN' was not a particularly popular film, it is a bit of a B-GRADE production. It is set in the village where there is an accidental killing. This song is the reconciliation of the perpetrator and the village. MUMTAZ and The Late RAJESH KHANNA are delightful here post-package with the voices and directed actions. A documentary from the 1970s shows the two on set of another Hindi film. Both appeared to be cold and arrogant and unhappy on that day and did not speak to each other between shots, completely unlike the appearance on screen which was surprising. MUMTAZ, dressed exquisitely like a princess, announced her continued diarrhea which, from a princess, seemed a tactless and incongruous conversation topic for BBC audiences of the 1970s. On screen, as we see, these two are wonderful.
I sang this song without the orchestra because it relies a lot on violins which are difficult to reproduce dynamically digitally. So I used drumming, fills and unaccompanied singing to get the type of sound. It is a wonderful childhood song we saw on VHS tapes when they were ancient films then!
