Octet in E-flat major, Op. 20 by Felix Mendelssohn

The octet ensemble of two violas, two cellos and four violins was a relatively new and unusual format at the time. Composers such as Louis Spohr had composed an octet in 1823 for an octet comprised of two separate quartets, however the piece by Mendelssohn stipulated that all 8 instruments should be played “in the style of a symphony”.

The work is comprised of four movements:
I. Allegro moderato ma con fuoco
II. Andante
III. Scherzo: Allegro leggierissimo
IV. Presto
