He tricks Biff into playing his old guitar on Doc's infamous amplifier with the settings turned up all the way. After getting Doc's journal back, Marty sees a new time traveling DeLorean appear outside. Inside is Einstein, a tape recorder, and a woman's shoe. Doc sent a message to Marty saying that he's in trouble and the DeLorean's new automatic retrieval unit has been activated so Marty can help him, but the time travel display is on the fritz so we don't know what time period to find him. Marty gets Einstein to sniff the shoe and leads him to the home of Edna Strickland, who's apparently getting her panties in a twist every fucking minute because she's the morality police in town. Seeing her lost shoe, she invites Marty inside. Marty learns several things about Miss Strickland's past. She used to be a journalist, she lost her shoe taken by a dog when a speakeasy burned down; now rebuilt into a video store. She keeps a record of Hill Valley history in her stack of newspapers. From the newspapers, Marty learns that the speakeasy burned down in 1931 and the arsonist named Carl Sagan was murdered in prison the day after. It's Doc! He's been framed! Marty and Einstein travel back to 1931 and end up interrupting a police chase against some gangsters. The DeLorean is hidden behind a billboard while Marty and Einstein make their way to town.
