Did you know that doctors were treating diabetic patients with high-fat low-carb diets all the way back in the 1700s?
Though high-fat ketogenic diets were found to effectively treat diabetes for over a century, they were largely abandoned due to the rapid adoption of insulin in the 1920s, which was considered then to be a miracle cure.
Prioritizing drugs over lifestyle with insulin therapy, however, led to unexpected long term complications in patients, including damage to large and small blood vessels that results in heart disease, strokes, kidney damage, neuropathy, amputations, blindness, dementia, and a decrease in life expectancy.
Once a rare condition, diabetes is now so common that drugstores dedicate entire aisles to it. One in every $4 spent in American healthcare goes to diabetic patients, with over $300 billion in direct costs every year.
The Diabetes story is a metaphor of the rapid adoption of a wonder drug without knowing the long term consequences.
And in an age when Hollywood influencers in the media are touting the seemingly miraculous benefits of our latest weight loss wonder drugs GLP-1 agonists like Ozempic, it's worth examining the long term risks and consequences of heavy handed pharmaceutical interventions.
Today, we're back with our friend Gary Taubes, an award-winning investigative science and health journalist and bestselling author of “Why We Get Fat” and “Good Calories, Bad Calories,” as well as his new book “Rethinking Diabetes.” Gary has dedicated his work to dismantling conventional nutritional theory with his research lectures and books. Na época em que Vasco Fernandes Coutinho enfrentava uma situação difícil devido aos ataques dos índios em sua Capitania do Espírito Santo, ele enviou um pedido de socorro ao Governador Mem de Sá, na Bahia. O Governador prontamente atendeu, despachando cinco embarcações bem tripuladas, com seu filho Fernão de Sá como Capitão-Mor da galé São Simão. Os outros capitães eram Diogo Morim, o Velho, e Paulo Dias Adorno. Eles chegaram a Porto Seguro, onde foram informados de que o maior contingente indígena hostil estava no rio chamado Bricaré, onde estavam atacando Vasco Fernandes. Decidiram então partir em busca deles, contando com a ajuda dos experientes navegadores Diogo Álvares e Gaspar Barbosa em seus caravelões.
Após navegar pelo rio durante quatro dias, avistaram as fortificações do inimigo próximas à água. Desembarcaram com os soldados enquanto os marinheiros mantinham as embarcações no meio do rio para evitar encalhar na maré baixa. A batalha começou, e no primeiro confronto os índios foram rapidamente derrotados. No entanto, eles se reagruparam com uma força avassaladora, forçando os portugueses a se desorganizarem e se misturarem com os inimigos. Os tiros vindos das embarcações não apenas não os defendiam, mas também feriam e matavam os próprios soldados portugueses. A 1979 videotaped version of Trevor Nunn's Royal Shakespeare Company production of the play by William Shakespeare. Produced by Thames Television, it features Ian McKellen as Macbeth and Judi Dench as Lady Macbeth. The TV version was directed by Philip Casson.
The original stage production was performed at The Other Place, the RSC's small studio theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon. It had been performed in the round before small audiences, with a bare stage and simple costuming. The recording preserves this style: the actors perform on a circular set and with a mostly black background; changes of setting are indicated only by lighting changes.

This video's a little late - it's from the last week that Dune 2 was being shown in local theatres.
Comprehensive list of things that will get me in the cinema:
1. A good f#@%ing movie.
Dune Part 1 was very good... at least to me. Dune Part 2 is in theatres, and from the previews and early comments it also sounds very good. But I've been burned before, by Jurassic World, the Disney Remakes (especially Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, Mulan), and many others. They scared me off the theatre, and I don't know what type of modern audience thinks those awful films cut it, but, people need higher standards for their entertainment.
I love action movies, superhero movies, dark crime films, sci-fi films, all that good stuff - all the things I keep seeing a lot of men say women don't show up to theatres for... I don't think it's correct, and I don't think theatres are dying, I think men and women aren't interested in badly written films made by a scummy and pandering film industry.
So help me Gawd, if this movie sucks... there's not really anything I'll be able to do about it. Yet somehow I still have hope. Gawd I hope Dune 2 is good...

For my next journey I’ve come to a remote craggy outcrop here in central Utah called the Rochester Art Panel that sits majestic at the end of a natural elevated highway. The ancient graffiti found here reads like a history book, a collection of gnosis from the old world that tells of tales yet to be deciphered by man. A magnificent rainbow draws the drifter closer into an unfolding narrative full of mega fauna, abundance & other horned deities. Like some mythical firmament etched in stone, Shambala or Eden, a paradise lost. The desert’s beauty is in stark contrast to the catastrophic events which scraped clean this barren landscape, leaving behind the bones of a prehistoric ecosystem. These petroglyphs hidden throughout the southwest share what I believe is a global language in psychic/symbolic form very different from our phonetic speak. There is an amazing life that has been purposefully hidden from our knowing to keep us under the spell of consumerism & apathy. Deeper knowledge of our world is shared in increments only when it benefits the gatekeepers. There is so much we don’t understand, so it is with great curiosity & willpower I explore these questions through the metaphysical lens.

Nuovo cinema Paradiso (literally "New Paradise Cinema") is a 1988 French-Italian coming-of-age drama film written and directed by Giuseppe Tornatore. It was internationally released as Cinema Paradiso in France, Spain, the UK and the US. Audio in Italian with English subtitles.
Set in a small Sicilian town, the film centers on the friendship between a young boy and an aging projectionist who works at the titular movie theatre. This Italian-French co-production stars Philippe Noiret, Jacques Perrin, Leopoldo Trieste, Marco Leonardi, Agnese Nano and Salvatore Cascio. The film score was composed by Ennio Morricone and his son, Andrea, marking the beginning of a collaboration between Tornatore and Morricone that lasted until Morricone's death on 6 July 2020.
In 1988 Rome, Salvatore Di Vita, a famous film director, returns home late one evening, where his girlfriend sleepily tells him that his mother called to say someone named Alfredo has died. Salvatore shies from committed relationships and has not been to his home village of Giancaldo, Sicily in thirty years. As his girlfriend asks him who Alfredo was, Salvatore is not able to fall asleep and flashes back to his childhood.
Credited with revitalizing Italy's film industry, Cinema Paradiso has been cited as one of the greatest films of all time. The ending is considered among the greatest endings in movie history.
It was a commercial success, and won several awards, including the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and the Cannes Film Festival's Grand Prix. It was nominated for 11 BAFTA Awards and won five; including Best Actor for Philippe Noiret, Best Supporting Actor for Salvatore Cascio, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Foreign Language Film, a record for a foreign language feature until it was broken by All Quiet on the Western Front in 2023.
