Necromancy is a subset discipline of Academic Arcana. Anciently, it has been practiced as early as recorded magical records indicate, but the purpose of ancient Necromancy was primarily as a burial rite, to ward scavenging animals away from the buried dead. It was not until 6100 BAC, a half-century after humans began developing the Arcanic Language, that mages began experimenting with using the Arcanic Language to take control of spirits.
The first academic Necromancy, of course, was motivated by the desire of the grief-stricken to commune with their lost loved ones. After early necromancers found success bridging the communication gap between the living and the dead, it was only a matter of time before more aggressive spellcasters bound spirits, willingly or not, into contracts of servitude enforced by the Arcanic Language.
These ghosts were cunning agents, as they retained some aspect of their previous intelligence and, with training, could use magic of their own.
However effective ghosts were, they were nevertheless prone to rebellion and resisting control. So, necromancers also experimented with imbuing corpses with sustainable animation, and thus the first controllable skeletons and zombies were created, destined to forever walk as mindless denizens of the night.
A myriad of different types of undead were created over the years, but that is discourse for another time. More relevantly, in Alaeria's modern era, Necromancy was regarded as a completely valid discipline, and while there were many spellcasters who used this magic to torment others, so too were there self-proclaimed "guardians of the dead," who used Necromancy as a tool to protect and serve others.
Before I was sent here to avoid the Cataclysm, Alaerians' disposition towards Necromancy was mixed and varied wildly between races and regions.
