2024 Toyota RAV4

Overview

The Toyota RAV4 turns 30 this year, and it is still obvious why the compact crossover regularly ranks as the best-selling non-pickup in the U.S. There’s nothing flashy here; the RAV4’s focus is on getting every job done without a fuss. It is practical, fuel-efficient, and rugged-looking. Available all-wheel-drive systems add a little bite to the stylistic bark of an SUV that’s actually best when tackling familiar suburban tasks. It offers plenty of features and its wide price range suits shoppers of many budgets. A 2.5-liter four-cylinder and eight-speed automatic deliver restrained acceleration in the name of good fuel economy. Beyond the attractive base price, cargo-friendly interior, and sensible road manners, Toyota also includes a host of driver-assistance tech and desirable infotainment features as standard, two more ways the RAV4 continues to be a challenge for rivals to overcome. A hybrid and a plug-in-hybrid powertrain are also available, but we review those models separately.

What's New for 2024?

Army Green, a paint color already seen on several of Toyota's bigger trucks and SUVs, makes its way to the RAV4 this year. The hue will be offered on the Adventure and TRD Off-Road trims as a no-cost option. A two-tone color combo will also be available for these variants, paired with either a white or a black roof.

Although we’re drawn to the TRD Off-Road, we'd practice restraint and choose the mid-range XLE Premium. It provides plenty of standard equipment that the LE and XLE don't offer as standard or at all, such as fog lights, 19-inch wheels, a power liftgate, a moonroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, faux-leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and soft-touch armrests. Toyota makes its suite of driver-assistance features standard across the lineup, so there's not much reason to go with a pricier trim—unless, of course, you need rugged looks or ventilated seats.

2024 Audi S8
Starting at $121.695

Highs: Potent twin-turbo V-8, deluxe cabin, agility-boosting rear-wheel steering.
Lows: Not particularly fuel efficient, sedate styling, six-figure price tag.
Verdict: The S8 combines sports sedan handling and luxury car splendor in a stealthy package.

What's New for 2024?

Like the regular A8 sedan, the S8 gains an app-based remote-start feature for 2024 as well as a new suite of apps designed to improve access to entertainment and navigation. Otherwise, the S8 is unchanged for the 2024 model year.

That six-figure starting price is steep, but the S8 comes well-equipped even by luxury car standards. We'd suggest the Comfort Plus package as it adds heated rear seats, a leather-wrapped dashboard, a head-up display, and fancier LED headlamps; the Executive package is also appealing and comes with blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assist, and 21-inch wheels.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The S8's sole engine choice is a potent one: a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 engine making 563 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel drive is standard, and the transmission is an eight-speed automatic. Audi claims a top speed of 155 mph, and there are fuel-saving systems, too, including cylinder deactivation and a mild-hybrid setup with a small electric motor and battery. At our test track, the S8 blasted to 60 mph in just 3.2 seconds. An active suspension system can control each wheel individually to improve ride quality, and it is tuned differently than that of the standard A8, delivering improved cornering prowess thanks to reduced body roll. Audi also includes equipment such as a torque-vectoring rear differential and rear-wheel steering to increase agility; powerful carbon-ceramic brakes are optional.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Fine materials line nearly every square inch of the S8's cabin, including leather upholstery, a faux-suede headliner, and a stitched leather dash cover. The front seats offer standard heating, cooling, and massage, while the rear cabin offers tons of space for passengers to stretch out. To pamper those in the back seat even more, consider the Rear Seat Comfort package, which adds power-adjustable outboard seats with heat, ventilation, and massage, plusher headrests, heated armrests, and a remote control for the car's infotainment system. Four-zone automatic climate control is standard, as is a multi-color ambient interior lighting system. The trunk is generously sized and identical to that of the A8, which proved its mettle in our testing by holding six carry-on suitcases. For comparison the Mercedes-Benz S-class held 5 and the BMW 7-series just three.

Cullinan
The Rolls-Royce Cullinan is one of the world's most extravagant SUVs straight from the factory. SPOFEC makes the English luxury motor car even more exclusive with a sophisticated refinement range that at the same time also boosts the driving dynamics. The spectacular SPOFEC OVERDOSE widebody gives the five-door an even more striking appearance. Under the fender flares at the front and rear axle is room for forged SPOFEC 24-inch wheels developed in cooperation with American manufacturer Vossen. The SPOFEC lowering module allows lowering the ride height of the Cullinan by about 40 millimeters to complement the sporty street tires. SPOFEC also breathes some extra fire into the twelve-cylinder twin-turbo engine to match the more agile handling. The performance increase to 504 kW / 685 hp shortens the 2.7-ton SUV's sprint from zero to 100 km/h to a mere 4.9 seconds. In order to give the V12 a sportier exhaust note, SPOFEC offers sport exhaust systems with and without electronic sound management. The German refinement specialist also customizes the interior of the Rolls-Royce Cullinan by customer request.

2024 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class
Starting at $199.450

Highs: Hypebeast-meets-aristocrat vibe, silky turbocharged powertrains, practically floats down the road.
Lows: Not as recognizable as a Rolls-Royce, massive markup over the standard S-class, V-12 engine guzzles gas like a pickup truck.
Verdict: As the ultimate Mercedes sedan, the Maybach S-class out-luxes everything else in the brand's portfolio—and well it should at this asking price.

Overview

Billionaire buyers looking for the ultimate in luxury will find the 2024 Mercedes-Maybach S-class a sedan fit for their regal routines. Based on the Benz-branded S-class, the Maybach version turns luxury all the way up and features interior materials that put it squarely in the same class with high-dollar rides such as the Bentley Flying Spur and the Rolls-Royce Ghost. Like those cars, the Maybach is designed to pamper every occupant, especially those in the rear, who are treated with options such as reclining seats with massage, a beverage cooler, and electrically operated doors. A standard air suspension virtually erases potholes, making it a peaceful place to close a multimillion-dollar deal or sip a glass of champagne on your way to the red carpet. And depending on how you customize it, the Maybach S-class can get you to your destination without attracting attention from paparazzi, or it can announce your arrival with hypebeast flair.

A Night Series appearance package is now available for the Maybach S-class that features darkened chrome exterior accents peppered with rose-gold details in the headlamps. The Night Series models come in gray, black, or white exterior colors or can be had with a two-tone Onyx Black and Mojave Silver scheme. The Maybach rolls on special dark-finished wheels embossed with a pattern made entirely of Maybach logos. The car's cabin is decked out, of course, but the Night Series takes it a step further with unique finishings, and you can choose from either an all-black leather upholstery or a white and black duo.

If you're gonna go with a Maybach version of the S-class, you might as well go big and get the S680 and its powerful V-12 engine. Standard features are of course plentiful and include luxury items such as soft-close doors, an air suspension, a 30-speaker Burmester stereo system, and a rear-seat entertainment system with two 11.6-inch touchscreens and much, much more.

Under the hood of every S580 sedan is a 496-hp twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 engine, which is augmented by a 48-volt hybrid system. Going with the S680 swaps in a 621-hp 6.0-liter V-12. All models will come with Mercedes' 4Matic all-wheel drive system. The V-8 makes 33 more horsepower than the old S560 from 2020, and it packs quite a punch.

2025 BMW i5
Starting at $68.000 est

Highs: Satisfyingly quick, blends comfort and sport adroitly, posh interior.
Lows: Less driving range than key rivals, infotainment tech is borderline complicated, less trunk space than gas 5-series sedan.
Verdict: The i5 offers everything that makes the 5-series appealing and adds punchy EV powertrains and well-honed driving chops.

Overview

BMW's been selling a 5-series luxury sedan for decades, but this latest generation is the first to spawn an all-electric variant called i5. The 2025 i5 offers much the same driving experience as its gasoline-powered sibling, meaning it's a comfortable and cossetting car with a taste of BMW's trademark athleticism—minus the sound of a gas engine, of course. While it's not quite an electric M5 super sedan, the dual-motor M60 xDrive model is close with 590 horsepower and a 60-mph time that we estimate will be just 3.3 seconds. The i5's other trims—the 335-hp eDrive40 and the 389-hp xDrive40 aren't as quick but offer more range, with the rear-drive eDrive40 model topping the lineup with 295 miles per charge. Technology takes over the front seat in the i5, with a sweeping digital dashboard that glows brightly with reconfigurable gauges and BMW's iDrive 8.5 infotainment interface. The growing number of EV luxury sedans in the i5's competitive set includes the posh Genesis Electrified G80, the tech-heavy Mercedes-Benz EQE, and the performance-oriented Porsche Taycan. Like its rivals, the i5 offers an eco-friendliness blended with plenty of luxury. All that's missing is a trim with enough performance to rival the gas-powered M5.

What's New for 2025?

The i5 was new just last year, but BMW is already adding a third model to the mix in the form of the xDrive40. This all-wheel drive model features two electric motors for a combined 389 horsepower and a claimed 60 mph time of 5.2 seconds. The driving range hasn't been announced for this new model yet, but we expect to see it come in a little bit below the rear-wheel drive eDrive40's 295-mile estimate.

2024 Lexus LX

Verdict: As big and ritzy as a Lexus SUV gets, but most rivals go further.

Overview

The Lexus LX, long known as a plusher version of the iconic Toyota Land Cruiser off-road SUV, no longer has a close relative at the Toyota store. That’s because the all-new 2024 Land Cruiser is now the smaller of the siblings rather than a near-twin. The LX, on the other hand, is unchanged and remains a full-size luxury SUV with proven off-road toughness. It’s powered by a smooth and powerful 409-hp twin-turbo V-6 working through a 10-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive. Rivals such as the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator are more flamboyant while the LX600, as it’s officially known, delivers a more subdued sense of luxury. The LX600 benefits from a reputation for both longevity and for being one luxury SUV that's as at home on a trail as on a boulevard. But while it delivers a supple ride and coddles its passengers in comfy seats, it lacks some of the extravagances of its similarly pricey competitors.

What's New for 2024?

The LX was completely redesigned for 2022 and has been little changed since. The 2024 model year sees but one update: the Ultra Luxury version's rear-seat entertainment system now comes with wireless Bluetooth headphones.

We think that the Luxury trim represents the best value here—value being a relative term when you’re talking six-figure SUVs—as it adds niceties such as semi-aniline leather upholstery, a Mark Levinson stereo system, and handsome 22-inch wheels among other features. Buyers who reflexively gravitate to the top of the lineup should know that the Ultra Luxury trim limits the cabin to just four seats.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The LX600 is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6 engine that makes 409 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. A 10-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive are both standard. Given Lexus's penchant for hybrid powertrains, we wouldn't be surprised to eventually see a gas-electric setup under the LX's hood, similar to the V-6 hybrid used in the 2022 Tundra pickup, but so far the company has made no move to offer it. On the road, the twin-turbo V-6 provides ample power and the refined presence that’s expected in a luxury vehicle. In our testing, the LX600 hustled to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds, which will be more than enough for most drivers.

Overview
Whether you're shuttling your heirs to boarding school or hauling home a restock of your wine cellar, the 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS-class SUV has the space and refinement for such duties. While GLS450 models come with a smooth-running 375-hp turbocharged inline-six, badge snobs will want to go for the more powerful 510-hp GLS580, which boasts a twin-turbo V-8 engine. The GLS is so refined on the road, its off-road capability is a surprising and welcome trait. Mercedes has made sure it's able to tackle more obstacles than most buyers could dream of taking on. The air suspension can raise for more ground clearance, there are clever all-wheel-drive features to help keep things going in the right direction, and there's even available underbody protection to shield the GLS's sensitive bits when navigating over rocks and ruts. On the road, the GLS's agility and comfortable ride are its most satisfying characteristics. Its taut body control is on par with the BMW X7 and bests that of rivals such as the Land Rover Range Rover and the Lincoln Navigator.

Mercedes has given the GLS a styling refresh for 2024 that includes an updated grille design, a reworked front bumper, new LED taillights, a new steering wheel, and fresh interior color schemes. The GLS450's six-cylinder powertrain gets a boost to 375 horsepower while the V-8­–powered GLS580 now boasts 510 ponies. That model can now also be had with a new Off-Road Engineering package, which adds underbody protection and a revised air suspension that can raise the SUV an additional 1.2 inches for better ground clearance.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance
Two models are offered—the six-cylinder GLS450 and the eight-cylinder GLS580—and both feature some hybridization. The GLS450's turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six is smooth as polished granite and gets a bump from 362 to 375 horsepower for the 2024 model year. The GLS580 is far more powerful, making 510 horsepower from its twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8. At our test track, the 2020 GLS450 we tested managed a brisk 5.5-second run to 60 mph and stopped from 70 mph in a short 154 feet. Despite its size, the GLS-class is easy to hustle on a twisty road, but it's not overtly sporty. All models come standard with an air suspension, but Mercedes also offers a trick system called E-Active Body Control.

2024 Rolls-Royce Spectre
Starting at $422.750

Highs: Absolutely silent inside, highest level of fit and finish, makes the same high-end statement as gas-powered Rolls-Royces.
Lows: Less driving range than other high-dollar EVs, road manners a bit on the floaty side, sharp impacts aren't entirely erased by the suspension.
Verdict: Rolls-Royce's first EV is a spectacular one, and proof that even the worlds most luxurious cars are capable of eco-friendly motoring.

Overview

Rolls-Royce is taking its ultimate-luxury ethos to a new realm with the all-electric 2024 Spectre coupe. James Bond probably wouldn't toast the new model with one of his shaken-not-stirred signature martinis given his history of battling the international crime organization known as Spectre. But he might want to drive the regal new coupe nonetheless. The Spectre rides on the same platform as the Phantom sedan and Cullinan SUV but is propelled by a fully electric powertrain consisting of two electric motors that pump out a combined 577 horsepower. The driving range is estimated to be as high as 291 miles per charge, which does not place the Spectre among the long-range EV cohort with less-expensive rivals such as the Tesla Model S and the Lucid Motors Air. But buyers with the $450,000 or so available to buy a Spectre aren't likely to road trip when their private jet is always standing ready at a nearby airfield. The Spectre is Rolls-Royce's first in a series of EVs, and the company says that its gasoline-powered models will be phased out of the lineup and replaced entirely with EVs by 2030.

Rolls-Royce will let you customize a Spectre pretty much any way you want. And that's a good thing, because, with a price tag this high, we expect buyers will want something truly personalized.

EV Motor, Power, and Performance
All Spectres will come with a dual-motor electric powertrain with 577 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque. After taking the Spectre on a test drive, we estimate that the electric powertrain will move the 6559-pound coupe to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds. You may scoff at that estimate and point to the Tesla Model S Plaid that hit 60 mph in 2.1 seconds in our testing, but we'd be quick to remind you that Rolls-Royce's brand ethos is more about quiet cruising than mind-bending performance. Although sharp impacts will still make themselves known, Rolls-Royce has installed adaptive suspension to ensure an appropriately isolated ride over all but the biggest bumps, and the engineers also made room for a massive amount of sound-deadening material to maintain a whisper-quiet cabin. And oh how quiet it is.

Hongqi H9 Review
The car you see is the Hongqi H9, a flagship luxury sedan that is packed with features and is out to change people’s opinions about Chinese luxury. For those of you who aren’t quite aware of Hongqi, it is a brand that is associated with a lot of prestige, as it is the oldest Chinese passenger car maker in the world. Now that you’ve got an idea of what we are dealing with, let’s jump right in.

Drive
Here in the UAE, the Hongqi H9 is available with two engine options: a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 248 horsepower and a more powerful 3.0-liter supercharged V6 engine that produces 279 horsepower.

Our test car is the 3.0-liter model is equipped with air suspension, meaning the ride is extremely smooth and that bumps in the road are almost unnoticeable. With 400 Nm of torque, the H9 never feels underpowered, but if you do have a lighter foot, you will be happy to know that NEDC fuel consumption averages stand at 9.0-liters for every 100 kilometers, which is extremely impressive for a car of this size.

When it comes to driving aids, the H9 has a lot to offer. There’s everything from a driver attention monitor to autonomous braking that kicks in if the driver doesn’t respond in time and blind-spot monitoring to lane departure alert. There’s also adaptive cruise control and automatic parking that make each and every drive in the all-new Hongqi H9 a safe and enjoyable one.

Interior
With a choice of four interior color options, the cabin is a spacious and comfortable place to be in. There’s leather on the seats, leather on the dashboard, leather on the door panels, and leather on the center console as well. The feeling of luxury is further heightened with wood and piano black trims as well as silver piping on the steering wheel, dashboard, and center console.

The design is very clean and minimal and that is made possible with two large screens – one for the instrument cluster and one for the infotainment screen – working as the central command center. With very few buttons and knobs, the cabin looks modern and welcoming and can be lit up in a choice of 253 colors using the ambient lighting system.

In the back, the H9 is just as comfortable, luxurious, and spacious, meaning that whether you are driving or being chauffeured in it, you are bound to have a great experience. There is plenty of space in terms of headroom and legroom, and comfort is provided by zero-gravity seats and a 4-zone climate control system.

Features
When it comes to the features that set the H9 apart, there’s a panoramic roof, seat heating and cooling for the front and back seats, a brilliant 12-speaker Bose audio system, an AQS air quality monitoring system, and a 360-degree camera system.

Exterior
The Hongqi H9 has an identity of its own and it is bound to turn heads wherever it goes.

2024 Land Rover Range Rover SV
Starting at $181.775

Highs: More horsepower than key rivals, plush cabin trimmings, still impresses off-road despite its on-track capabilities.
Lows: Harsh ride on 23-inch wheels, hard-to-swallow price tag, first year models are by invitation only.
Verdict: The Range Rover Sport SV is a high-dollar, high-power performance SUV that still lives up to the Land Rover brand's off-road ethos.

Overview
Leaving the former 575-hp Range Rover Sport SVR in the dust, the all-wheel-drive Range Rover Sport SV is the most powerful Rover ever. Its 626-hp twin-turbo V-8 is like using fighter jets on a fox hunt. Good for up to 180 mph, the Range Rover Sport SV gets the supercar treatment with a lightweight carbon fiber wheel option and enormous eight-piston Brembo calipers to clamp its carbon ceramic brake rotors. Quad tailpipes aside, the Range Rover SV is built to exemplify Land Rover luxury. Its bolstered front bucket seats carry components that complete its 29-speaker surround sound system and its knob-less infotainment touchscreen has gone fully digital. Despite it being nearly an inch lower than other Range Rover Sports, there's simply nothing down to earth about this high-performance utility vehicle.

What's New for 2024?

The Range Rover Sport SV is a completely new iteration of performance-luxury motoring from Land Rover for 2024. Taking pages out of the playbook of a supercar, the Range Rover Sport SV joins the 600-hp club, gets a carbon-fiber wheel option, carbon ceramic brakes, and uses a specially tuned air suspension to keep it steady across road-course curbing. It will likely overpower its all-season tires immediately. The Range Rover Sport SV is not for the timid.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Under the bonnet lays a righteous 626-hp twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 engine with 553 pound-feet of torque mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Range Rover Sport SV is all-wheel drive, and Land Rover says its leap to 60 mph takes just 3.6 seconds. After driving one on a track in Portugal, we believe it. Depending on the drive mode, the SV can sit at nearly an inch lower than other Range Rover Sports as part of its new 6D Dynamic suspension system. Instead of conventional anti-roll bars, the SV uses hydraulic dampers and its airbag suspension to reduce body roll. To handle life's lefts and rights, the SV has all-wheel steering and brake-based torque vectoring. With a top speed of 180 mph, the Range Rover SV promises to boast performance that will likely be restricted by the common sense of the person helming it rather than by the limits of its all-season Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires.

The Yangwang U8 is a 1,184bhp plug-in hybrid SUV that can float on water

BYD’s posh sub-brand unveils the U8 Premium Edition in China. Will do 0-62mph in 3.6 seconds (on land)

Earlier this year we brought you news of the Yangwang U9 – an all-electric Chinese supercar that used its fancy suspension tech to bunny hop and drive safely on just three wheels. At the time we thought that was the most bonkers thing we’d see all year, but now we’re welcoming the Yangwang U8 to the world.

The second car to be shown off by BYD’s posh sub-brand, the U8 is an electric SUV that uses four motors – one for each wheel – and some very fancy independent torque vectoring to put 1,184bhp down on the road. As a result, the U8 will do 0-62mph in 3.6 seconds and can spin all four wheels to do proper tank turns. Should be rather useful on the school run. There’s something called the ‘DiSus-P Intelligent Hydraulic Body Control System’ too which, in a similar manner to the U9 supercar, allows you to drive on three wheels in the event of a tyre blowout.

Oh, and just in case you were worried about range, there’s also a 2.0-litre turbo engine on board to act as a range extender, so with a full tank of petrol and juiced up batteries you’ll manage 621 miles without a stop.

Remarkably, we’re told that deliveries will start in China in October this year. For those not paying attention, that’s currently five days away. How on earth?

Anyway, those first deliveries will be of the U8 Premium Edition, which is set to cost over £123,000 in Yangwang’s home market. Looks like that’ll get all of the headline tech as standard though, including a rather remarkable ‘emergency flotation’ function that ensures the U8 can float on water for up to 30 minutes. Yep, this giant range-extender SUV can literally become a boat.

Designed to keep you safe in flash floods or to allow you to cross rivers on off-road adventures, the system apparently kills the engine, closes the windows and opens the sunroof before propelling you along at 1.8mph by spinning its wheels. Bonkers.

Back in the normal electric SUV world, the U8 will fast charge at up to 110kW to allow for a 30 to 80 per cent top-up in 18 minutes. Or if you’re feeling lazy and can’t be bothered to faff around with cables, there are three wireless charging pads underneath that allow for 50kW charging. It also uses vehicle-to-load capabilities to dispense charge to other devices at 6kW.

The interior is crammed full of Nappa leather, sapele wood, speakers and many, many screens. Seriously, just check out how many displays are in there. The dash alone features a 12.8-inch OLED central screen and two 23.6-inch displays either side.

Overview
With smooth styling with a ride to match, the two-row Audi Q8 is a dramatized version of the boxier Q7 three-row SUV. They both use the same solid underpinnings, including a turbocharged 335-hp V-6 engine, eight-speed automatic, and all-wheel drive, but the Q8's starting price is significantly higher. The Q8's chassis and acceleration are a mix of sweet and spicy, but this luxury SUV isn't shy about gulping down fuel. Much like other sporty-shaped SUVs, such as the BMW X6 or Mercedes-Benz GLE-class Coupe, the Q8 puts comfort first, with a plush interior and high-tech helm. A 500-hp SQ8 and even wilder 591-hp RS Q8 are also available, but we review each of those high-power versions separately.

What's New for 2024?
Audi gives the upscale Q8 some significant updates for 2024 with new looks and equipment. The Q8 refresh includes redesigned front and rear fascias, new optional matrix-beam LED headlights, new wheels, colors, and seat stitching.

We'd choose the Audi Q8 Premium trim and enhance it with select options. Its standout standard features already include a fully digital gauge cluster, built-in navigation, leather upholstery, heated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, and a power-operated tailgate. While 21-inch rims are standard, we'd still spec the Black Optic package for its sportier appearance. We'd also add the Convenience package (blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, wireless charging, and more) and the Towing package. The latter unlocks the Q8's maximum tow rating of 7700 pounds.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance
Audi provides every Q8 with a turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 that makes 335 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. It pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission and Quattro all-wheel drive. A 48-volt hybrid-assist system aids stop-start operation, which was smooth and quiet during our experience. While the Audi had plenty of passing power on the highway, it felt hesitant around town unless we crushed the gas pedal. The transmission had mostly dutiful reactions, but it and the engine best cooperated in Dynamic mode, which provoked snappier responses. We only wish the engine and exhaust made gutsier sounds. While it swiftly changes directions and obediently hustles around corners, it's less engaging than Audi sedans such as the sleek A7. The Q8's steering has light effort and linear feedback, which was relaxing on long trips but boring on switchback roads.

What is it?
This is the second generation of Toyota’s C-HR, a mid-size crossover that started life in 2017 as a funky SUV commissioned by Toyota boss Akio Toyoda as a sort of experiment to see what the company could do. A toe in the water, with no expectation of how it might sell.

Much to the company’s own surprise it sold in far bigger numbers than expected. Up to 330,000 or so C-HRs a year rolled out globally, with customers sold on the blend of sensible shoes powertrains and funky styling.

Bit more pressure for the second one...
You’d think so, but clearly Toyota hasn’t felt the need to play it safe. If anything, the newer one is even more out there than the original. Which is good, because it means the car stands out in a heavily congested part of the car market that includes the Nissan Qashqai, Seat Ateca, Citroen C3 Aircross and Ford Puma.

It slots into the Toyota range above the Aygo X and Yaris Cross. But it's smaller than the RAV4, which is quite a chunky thing these days. In most of the world there's now a thing called Corolla Cross, which is the same size as the C-HR but has a boxier outline for more interior space and outward vision.

It looks... pretty good.

It does, doesn’t it? The C-HR hits all the latest trends to go for a full house in design bingo: two-tone paints, contrasting roof, slimline LED headlights, aero-led styling and even this season’s must-have full-width rear light bar. Better aero helps economy at motorway speeds. But not much, because the frontal area has grown, and the wheels now go up to 20 inches.

Toyota says the C-HR is designed for people "who are not afraid to stand out". The irony of course of the C-HR’s ‘something a bit different’ schtick is that there are thousands of other people feeling equally individual behind the wheel of their mass market SUVs from one of the world’s largest carmakers.

Is it hybrid only now?

All C-HRs are electrified now, but just one has a plug. There are both 1.8- and 2.0-litre engines available as prime movers, just as with the Corolla, with the regular Toyota hybrid system. Boosted by their motors at full throttle, they give total system outputs of 138 and 193bhp.

There’s no EV option, but you can get a plug-in hybrid (or at least, you will get the option when it goes on sale later in 2024). It has the same 2.0 engine, but because the electrical system is more juiced up, you've got a total of 223bhp.

What’s it like inside?
The interior is jazzed up from what we’d usually expect inside a Toyota. The 50 shades of grey plastic have been given fancy new textures and patterns, and there’s certainly a better variety of material inside.

2024 Porsche Cayenne First Drive: The Excellent One-Car Solution
No surprise, Porsche continues to find ways to improve its already great Cayenne SUV.

Maybe it's the parking situation, maybe it's finances, or maybe you're just practical. Whatever the reason, plenty of folks are looking for one car that can do everything, and it's hard to find a better one-car solution than the 2024 Porsche Cayenne.

Of course, we already knew the refreshed Cayenne was going to be good. We drove a late-stage prototype nine months ago that may as well have been the finished product but for the light camouflage livery it carried. Indeed, little has changed since then.

Play It Again, Stephan

Everything we experienced behind the wheel of the production version of the 2024 Porsche Cayenne SUV validated our initial impressions of the prototypes. Porsche engineers refined the Cayenne's purpose and personality to a singular essence that permeates every trim level and powertrain. Every version of this extensively refreshed model drives the same, even with some getting more power and others getting better fuel economy. But they are otherwise identical in character.

Provided to us for this review were two of the most interesting powertrains available at launch, the revamped Cayenne E-Hybrid plug-in hybrid (PHEV) V-6 and the once again V-8-powered Cayenne S (now with twin turbos). Both were equipped with optional air springs and rear-wheel steering along with the standard electronically adjustable shock absorbers. Somewhat unusually, these two 2024 Porsche Cayenne models make about the same power—463 hp for the PHEV and 468 hp for the V-8-and illustrate exactly what we're talking about.

Forget about differences in curb weights and what's under the hood. What we wrote five months ago about those prototypes is just as true today. "It's in the movements," we said, "in the way these 2024 Porsche Cayennes react when you first turn into a corner and the way the weight transfers and the body rolls. It's all very deliberately and highly controlled, like a dancer—the manner in which the weight settles on the outside wheels and the suspension crouches, takes a set, and eventually releases as you exit the turn. Each Cayenne does it the same way, so much so that the driver of a base model can easily keep up with the driver of a Turbo GT who isn't using enough throttle."

The only real difference we detected between the prototypes and the finished Cayennes was in the rear-steering tuning. Back in January, we wrote the system was practically invisible but it's a bit more noticeable now in the tightest corners when you're really pushing the car hard. There's a slight sensation of the rear end moving in an abnormal way, almost like a hint of oversteer when you fling the Cayenne into a corner like it's a tall 911. It never actually gets loose (at either end), but it certainly makes the car feel livelier than you'd expect of an SUV.

2024 BMW 8-Series Gran Coupe

Highs: Slick styling, potent turbocharged engines, added sensibility of four doors.
Lows: Tall folks may feel pinched in the back seat, the hot V-8 engine is an expensive option, steering lacks road feel.
Verdict: The 8-series Gran Coupe offers plenty of presence to augment its turbo muscle.

Overview

BMW didn't invent the four-door coupe body style, but its 2024 8-series Gran Coupe is one of the best-looking examples we can think of. Its flowing lines and dramatic fastback roofline cut an elegant silhouette whether it's cruising or parked. A silky-smooth turbocharged six-cylinder engine is standard, but a honking twin-turbo V-8 is available if you want more muscle. Both are quick, dispatching the big sedan to 60 mph in 4.7 and 3.0 seconds, respectively. The downside of the 8-series' dramatic exterior styling, though, is a rear seat that's tight for tall passengers—but that's true of its rivals as well. Speaking of which, the 8-series runs in a class of excellent sports sedans that includes the Audi S7, the Porsche Panamera, and the Mercedes-AMG GT four-door, all of which offer similar performance and panache.

BMW hasn't changed a thing on the 8-series Gran Coupe for 2024 and it rolls into the new year the same stylish and luxurious sedan it was last year.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

A smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission and a pair of velvety engines highlight the 8-series Gran Coupe. The 840i features a 335-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six-cylinder powertrain that feeds either rear- or all-wheel drive. The M850i boasts a 523-hp twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 and standard all-wheel drive. While the base engine doesn't pack the wallop that the V-8 does, it's still plenty quick and produces a pleasant timbre when rushed. Those looking for more substantial thrust won't be disappointed by the M850i, which has a detuned version of the engine in the BMW M8 Gran Coupe (reviewed separately) that makes up to 617 ponies. The Alpina B8 model nearly matches the M8 Gran Coupe with a 612-hp version of the twin-turbo V-8; BMW claims it's capable of a zero-to-60-mph time of just 3.3 seconds. All of the 8s provide a splendid ride and playful handling responses. While the steering delivers little feedback when the road turns twisty, the big Bimmer compensates with strong brakes and the aforementioned powertrain refinement.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
Like the two-door 8-series coupe and convertible, the Gran Coupe's interior is lavishly outfitted—albeit sedately styled. All models have a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, customizable ambient lighting, a large head-up display, leather upholstery, a panoramic sunroof, and wireless charging.

2023 Maserati MC20 Cielo First Drive: Touch the Sky and Come Alive
Maserati drops the top on its mid-engine supercar to create an exotic convertible you can drive every day.

"Cielo." It means "sky" in Italian. Such is the lyrical beauty of the Italian language, Maserati didn't need to think beyond the prosaic to come up with a great-sounding name for the convertible version of its mid-engine supercar: the 2023 MC20 Cielo. It's worked before: This is, remember, the company that calls its four-door sedan, simply, the Quattroporte. Plain old English "Four Door" somehow doesn't conjure the same romantic elegance.

Not that the MC20 needs any more romance. In coupé form, Maserati's first mid-engine supercar in decades is a beguiling machine, a confident and capable car powered by one of the most charismatic high-performance V-6 engines of the modern era—an engine designed and engineered in-house at Maserati. It's not quite a Ferrari 296GTB and not quite a Lamborghini Huracán, but something all its own: a sports car with a soupçon of grand turismo evident in the mix that makes it as easy and comfortable to drive every day as a C8 Corvette.

The Good Bits Haven't Changed
The stuff we like about the MC20 is all there in the 2023 Maserati MC20 Cielo. The output of the twin-turbo dry-sump Nettuno V-6—Nettuno is Italian for Neptune, the ancient Roman god of the sea whose trident inspired the Maserati logo—remains unchanged at 621 hp at 7,500 rpm and 538 lb-ft of torque from 3,000 to 5,500 rpm. It drives the rear wheels through the same slick eight-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission.

Performance is unchanged, too. The small carmaker claims the 2023 Maserati MC20 Cielo will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in about 2.7 seconds, just like the coupe. Claimed top speed is similarly just more than 200 mph.

As with the coupe, one of the keys to the MC20 Cielo's performance is its relatively low overall mass. The MC20 coupe's central carbon-fiber monocoque is made up of 57 molded pieces. Aluminum structures bolted to the front and rear of the monocoque anchor the front suspension and steering bits, as well as the rear suspension and V-6 engine and transmission assembly.

Cleverly, the monocoque was designed from the outset to facilitate a convertible version with only minor changes. As a result, the MC20 Cielo weighs only 143 pounds more than the MC20 coupe; the weight increase is pretty much all down to the glass roof and the mechanisms that stow it within/retrieve it from a compartment above the engine, in just 12 seconds.

2023 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class

The black-and-tan color scheme pays homage to the Project Maybach concept car with cool monoblock wheels rendered in the same tan color. The two-tone theme continues throughout the car's luxurious interior. The second special edition, also limited to just 150 examples, is the Haute Voiture. The Haute Voiture is offered only in S680 form and features a two-tone blue and rose-gold exterior paint with matching monoblock wheels. The cabin is decked out with bouclé upholstery, rose gold accents, linen and mohair floor mats, a patterned headliner, and matching luggage.

What's New for 2024?

It's still early in the Range Rover's fifth generation, but already Land Rover has tweaked the powertrain lineup for 2024. The plug-in-hybrid P440e has been replaced with a more powerful P550e which makes 542 horsepower. P400 and P530 models see no changes to their horsepower ratings, but the top-spec SV model is now powered by a 606-hp V-8 engine that wears the P615 moniker. Elsewhere, Land Rover has introduced a new customization service called SV Bespoke which provides buyers more opportunities for personalization when building their dream Range Rover. To help draw attention to its SV Bespoke program, Land Rover revealed an ultra-exclusive Carmel Edition model during the 2023 Monterey Car Week event in California. The $371,475 special edition features Cream Ash Burr and white ceramic interior trim, pearl oyster accents, two-tone leather upholstery, specially-embroidered cushions, and unique 23-inch wheels with white inserts. BMW's M performance division, purveyor of land rockets like the M3 and M5 sedans, has dropped a hot-rod SUV on the tall-speedster class. Slotting above the three-row X7 in BMW's SUV lineup, the new XM is an all-new two-row crossover with serious sporting intentions. The 2023 XM's styling is inspired by the XM Concept from 2021. Although toned down, it's still an aggressive design with gaping kidney-shaped grille openings, stacked tailpipes, and a slightly sloped roof that hints at a fastback shape. Under the hood is a 644-hp plug-in hybrid powertrain that gets its muscle from a twin-turbocharged V-8. About 30 miles of electric-only driving should be possible with a fully charged battery but it's the XM's performance potential that has our interest piqued.
