Every weekend, we pick a movie you can stream that dovetails with current events. Old, new, blockbuster, arthouse: They’re all fair game. What you can count on is a weekend watch that sheds new light on the week that was. The movie of the week for January 21 through 27 is Gaslight (1944), which is available to stream on Filmstruck or digitally rent on Amazon, YouTube, iTunes, Google Play, and Vudu.
The term “gaslighting” has gotten thrown around a lot over the past year, mostly in reference to political campaign tactics — when candidates claimed something had (or hadn’t) happened, and refused, when confronted with contradictory evidence, to acknowledge otherwise. Lauren Duca most famously wrote about the term for Teen Vogue in a piece titled “Donald Trump Is Gaslighting America,” for which she caught some heat and also raised the profile of Teen Vogue.
But as with most terms that quickly become popular, a lot of people don’t know what it really means. Does it just mean deceiving people? Or is it something more specific?
You could look up definitions, but the best way to understand gaslighting is to go to the source. George Cukor’s Gaslight — based on a 1938 play by Patrick Hamilton — stars Ingrid Bergman as a naive, sweet young woman named Paula who as a young girl witnessed the murder of her beloved aunt (and guardian) at their home. Years later, in Italy, she meets and marries dashing Gregory (Charles Boyer), who returns with her to London to live in the house she inherited from her aunt, which is also the house where the murder occurred.
But slowly, over time, Paula begins to doubt her sanity. Gregory tells her that she’s becoming forgetful and fitful, acting in irregular ways. He confines her to the house, and tells everyone she’s not well. At night she hears knocking in the walls. She sees the gas lighting dim. But he tells her she’s imagining things.
The film also features Joseph Cotten as a detective who begins to suspect that something’s up, and Angela Lansbury as the saucy housemaid. It was nominated for seven Oscars in 1945 (including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay).
And while I find the film’s ending unsatisfactory — it lets Gregory off the hook by painting him as less of a sociopath and more of a very determined and innovative thief — the scenes in which Gregory is flat-out lying to Paula, coolly watching her come to pieces, are utterly chilling. It’s abuse, and an insidious kind, since the abuser doesn’t leave any marks.
The term “gaslighting” comes from the movie, and so its definition is rather specific: when a person lies for their own gain to another person so repeatedly and with so much confidence that the victim begins to doubt her own sanity. And, as the film puts it, a bit of Stockholm Syndrome develops as well: The victim, now uncertain that she can perceive reality correctly, becomes dependent on the gaslighter, more attached to him than ever.
The trope has been repeated throughout film history (The Girl on the Train is a great example), but Gaslight still holds up — especially in a week where people are throwing around terms like “gaslighter-in-chief” to describe the newly inaugurated president. And if you can stomach watching Gaslight, it’s a useful reminder that just because you feel like you’re going crazy doesn’t mean you are.

MY DECADE OF POLITICAL ACTIVISM on behalf of White nationalism began in October 1999, when I was ten. I gave my first public interview to the salacious daytime talk show The Jenny Jones Show. It was a trip of firsts: one of the first times I left my home state of Florida; my first trip to Chicago; and my first time in the North at all. It was the first time I rode in a limo, when they picked us up and dropped us off at our hotel. At that hotel, on the morning before we headed to the studio for filming, I got to order my first pay-per-view movie (the remake of The Mummy with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz). At the studio, it was my first experience in a greenroom. It was my first time in the public eye, my first time out front, and my first time claiming publicly my intention to lead White nationalism into its next generation.
The experience was genuinely fun. It was also terrifying, and it taught me terrible lessons.
The Jenny Jones Show was a nationally syndicated daytime talk show filmed in the same studios in the NBC Tower in Chicago as its rival The Jerry Springer Show. Jenny and Jerry—and Geraldo and Maury and others like them—often brought on unsophisticated guests to face a shouting and brawling live audience, to great commercial success; The Jerry Springer Show, by far the leader of the genre, ended that season with ratings just behind Oprah.
The episode they invited me and my dad for was titled “Hateful Websites on the Internet” and ran on October 4, 1999. Several years before, David Duke, my dad’s oldest friend, had negotiated to appear on The Jerry Springer Show in a one-on-one interview, away from the jeering audience. Thanks to that negotiation, David was able to speak to Springer’s huge viewership without having to face the demeaning taunts of the studio audience. For my first interview, my dad negotiated something similar, allowing me to give a one-on-one interview offstage. In addition, the producers also offered to pay for a trip to DisneyQuest, the virtual reality amusement park that had recently opened downtown.
My dad asked me over and over, even up to the day of filming, if I was sure I wanted to give the interview. I felt listened to and respected, and I felt like I was fully consenting to my participation. I believed in the cause, as much as a curious child can believe in any ideology, and I was excited to begin advancing it myself. A month earlier, I had created a kids’ page on Stormfront, the website my dad had founded. I had already seen reporters coming to the house to interview my dad, and I’d become familiar with the hostile way they wrote about us as “hateful.”
When we arrived at the set, my dad went out with the other guests, including other White power leaders and two daughters of Fred Phelps, the founder of the Westboro Baptist Church, a group known for picketing the funerals of soldiers and queer people. The studio was built in the middle of a large open room, so the crew, the guests who hadn’t gone on yet, the kids of the Westboro family, and I could stay in the greenroom or walk all around the set. I watched the lighting crew and cinematographers, while I heard the echoes of the angry crowd through the thin prop walls. The crew were friendly and asked me if I needed anything while I hung out with them behind the scenes. I refused the makeup artist’s offers several times, because I didn’t think makeup was for boys. I remember her explaining that it wouldn’t be visible, and was only meant to keep the glare of the stage lights from shining off my face. I held firm, committed to upholding my sense of gender norms, and she relented.
When the time for my interview came, the crew turned on fog machines that produced a dramatic cloud around the stool the pro- ducers led me to. I was near the corner of the stage, behind two panels they slid open to reveal me there...

A San Diego police officer has resigned after he was caught locked in the backseat of his squad car with a female detainee who propositioned him for sex last year, newly released bodycam footage showed.
Officer Anthony Hair left his post about a month after a probe was launched into the August 2023 incident and one day before he was to meet with investigators for his second scheduled interview.
Hair, who had been with the SDPD for two years, found himself in the vehicle with the female suspect after he arrested her on suspicion of stealing a car outside a convenience store, according to CBS 8.

Stephen Mitford Goodson died of a "heart attack" in 2018, but I'd like to think he'd approve of this narration. I've hated fractional reserve central banking since watching The Money Masters nearly 10 years ago, but this book took my hatred to new levels—especially because I'm of mostly German descent. I bought 10 copies to spread the word, but most people will listen to a 3 hour podcast before reading a single sentence in a book, so I decided to make this.
I own no rights to this book and will never try to make a single penny from it. At first, I just wanted a clean recording. Then I wanted to include the text...and the footnotes...and the images...and then I figured every slide should have an image...and soon this project consumed five months of my free time. When I couldn't find an image that represented a given slide, I tried to find a beautiful photo of that country's scenery or its currency, political cartoons from the era, or relevant images from my meme folder. When all else fails, you get the wall of text.
I'll be the first to admit that Stephen Mitford Goodson didn't get everything right (particularly nukes), but on balance, I believe his book is hugely important and needs to be understood by more people. Yes, this is dense, and arguably too fast. But I hope you, dear reader, investigate every single claim in this book for yourself. I hope you make some nutritious food (no seed oils!) while showing this to friends. I hope you become a beacon of remoralization for everyone in your circle. It's not going to be easy, but we ARE are going to make it.

World, meet the next Bill Nye: his name is Marco Arturo, and he's here to school you on the connection between vaccines and autism. It's a contentious topic: The CDC and the World Health Organization both say the causal link is false — yet vaccine refusal has been linked to measles and whooping cough outbreaks in recent years. If you ask a stranger off the street, it's likely that they have strong feelings about vaccination — and Marco Arturo used that controversy in his favor. This kid's video on evidence that vaccines cause autism is 100 percent on-point... and also a little bit adorable.
Marco Arturo starts off by saying, "We've all been lied to by doctors and pharmaceutical companies about vaccines, and after a lot of research, I realized that vaccines do and will cause autism." Are you up in arms yet? He continues:
Actually, I gathered every single document I found and put it in this folder right here. Every single bit of evidence there is in the observable universe that vaccines do cause autism is inside of this folder, and I will go page by page, reading and explaining everything I've got in here because it's a lot of information.
He proceeds to open up the folder only to find — absolutely nothing. There's only sheet after sheet of blank paper.
The 12-year-old Mexican scientist looks skeptical for a moment, then says, exasperated, "I think it might be because there is absolutely no evidence to support the statement that vaccines are linked to autism in any way whatsoever." I mean, have you met a sassier kid? Specifically, a kid who gets sassy about science? Bill Nye, watch your back.
Not only does Arturo have personality, but he's got the facts down. "Smallpox was eradicated thanks to vaccines!" he says. "And you might think, 'It's my child, it's my choice.' Okay, I agree. It's your choice if you want to expose your child to deadly diseases, but you know, it's not just your child. It's basically everyone else's child. It's also everyone else's child you're putting in danger because you read some forwarded email."
Sassy, but he's right: vaccines are far more effective than leaving your child unvaccinated, but they're not perfect, either. The mumps vaccine is 88 percent effective, according to Wired, while the vaccines for measles are 97 percent effective. Take, for example, when parents don't vaccinate their children against measles, which is incredibly easy to spread: by infecting a now-larger, unvaccinated population, measles can more easily reach the vulnerable 3 percent of the vaccinated population whose vaccines weren't effective. According to Wired, once vaccination levels drop below 90 to 95 percent of the population, it can spur outbreaks, since not enough people are vaccinated to keep the disease from spreading.
"So, please," Arturo ends his video, before dropping a piece of paper with "mic" written on it. "Vaccinate your children." It's super shareworthy — not only to spread the word about vaccination, but to encourage kids to make a difference in STEM, just like Arturo has.

Dahria, you always go above and beyond! Incredibly thorough and informative. Reading this made me think of the simpsons episodes that align with true events. What I had to remind myself is that for every episode they got it right, there are hundreds that are far fetched and never come to fruition. However, i can’t lie about how convincing it can be!

This was such an intriguing post! I have not heard of this exact theory, but I have most definitely heard of several instances of things like the Simpsons predicting things from 9/11 to who is gonna win the Superbowl game. It is a very enticing topic and seems pretty reasonable and believable. I can see how this would have a lot of believers. It is eerie to think about. Predictive Programming could be a way to stop such adverse reactions to things in the future.

This is one of the more interesting conspiracies I have heard of, and one that is a bit convincing, i have heard of instances when cartoons like The Simpsons or Johnny Bravo predicted 9/11, but i did not expect there to be so many of these coincidences. You wrote about this topic and great detail and I appreciate the fact that you put in videos as well.

I like how you criticize the predictive programming. the Inconsistency of the pseudoscience and the not built up by true facts as well as the media’s function are all analyzed. That’s why personally when I watched a country’s news (e.g:CNN ), I usually go to another country’s media(BBC).

I have never heard of this before and I think it is so interesting! I feel like I have time and time again seen on twitter how a cartoon or a tv show predicting certain real life catastrophes. I think confirmation bias does come into play here where we only notice the times that fictional tv does happen to randomly predict certain events, but not every other time the show airs where they don’t predict something.

I found this post interesting to read because I did not know about this belief and I found it cool to learn about. I really liked how you pointed out the social learning theory and how it might back this belief. I definitely think the media influences society in a multitude of ways, as explained by the media paradox. I know certain trends, such as the kinds and descriptions of alien abductions and sightings can change based off the media’s interpretation of these things. I can definitely see how the media and social learning played a role with the predictive programming beliefs as well.

All I could think about while reading this was movies such as The Hunger Games or really any movie that shows a futuristic society. Do these believers think that this is also a sign of our future? Are we going to be sending off kids to fight each other to the death like in The Hunger Games?

I’ve never heard of this before and wow it’s kind of amazing! With the popular media today, like Hunger Games, I can see why people really believe in this stuff! A lot of people have a mistrust in the government and I feel like conspiracy theories like this are usually why. I will agree sometimes the government can be sketchy, but I don’t think (at least I hope not) that the government could even pull this off. This is a very interesting topic, I’m so glad I read it!

INGLEWOOD, California—Given a live global platform Saturday night by Netflix, Katt Williams closed out an electric hour of comedy punctuated by multiple audio/visual cues with a call for the United States to pay out reparations for enslaving generations of Black Americans, and citing our eager willingness to fund other nations such as Ukraine right now as proof of concept.
“It is now time for Black people in America to get paid reparations for everything that them and their ancestors have been through in American history,” Williams declared in front of 6,000 in attendance at YouTube Theater in Inglewood, California, plus upward of millions more watching live on Netflix. “Why now, Katt? Thanks for asking, white friends. I’ll tell you why now. And understand white friends, I don’t speak for all Black people. But I do speak for all n—rs. And you are not supposed to know the difference.”
Williams continued: “The time is now. And understand, white friends. I know you’re thinking, no seriously, Katt, why now? I’ll tell you why. And these are the facts. We just gave $100 billion to the Ukraine. And God bless the Ukrainians. But off the record? We don’t know them n—-rs like that! You could’ve gave that money to Black people. The fuck? We done gave them all that money. The truth is they over there getting their ass whooped over there. You coulda gave that money to the Black people of Los Angeles, and they’d have went over there and whooped their ass in two weeks. Look. It looks like reparations is for Black people. But it’s not. It’s for you, white friend. It’s for you. It’s going to help us, but it’s for you. Sure, every Black person going to wake up with $20 million in the bank. So the fuck what? It’s for you, white friends. You think American been great before? Wait til we got a country full of rich n—rs. This fitting to be the greatest country in the world, bitch!”
The comedian also hoped to persuade more conservative white Americans to support reparations by appealing to their baser instincts.
“White friend, don’t you want to get slavery behind you? You never had a slave in your motherfucking life. Get this past you. You pay them reparations, racism is dead. Get it past you, white friends,” Williams concluded. “Here’s what they won’t tell you, white friends. You pay them reparations, you can say n—r any time you want to, do you hear me?”
Katt Williams: Woke Foke, just the second stand-up special streamed live globally by Netflix after last year’s Chris Rock: Selective Outrage, was one of the centerpiece events of the second-ever Netflix Is a Joke Fest, happening through the first 12 days and nights of May across Los Angeles. Williams had several comedians warm up the audience in the two hours leading up to livestream, and he opened by expressing his gratitude at how far he’d come since his early years. “It was ’99 and the 2000s and I was in this Inglewood at the Hollywood Park Casino for $100 a week, and God brought me 24 Kobe years later, bam! Live. Right here in motherfucking Inglewood. God really is the greatest.”
Part of what drew Netflix to picking Williams for their next live special was his three-hour performance on retired footballer Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay podcast, which has racked up more than 68 million views since premiering Jan. 3 on YouTube. The comedian made sure to shout that out early in his hour, too: “I tried to be incog-Negro but thanks to Shannon Sharpe’s loudmouth ass, the gig is up. Everybody knows I’ll tell. But I don’t do no snitching! Y’all know my job. In my spare time I infiltrate the Illuminati. Look for their secrets. Run back. Tell y’all. And they’d kill me if they could, but I’m too fast, and the Lord keep blessing me.”
Although Williams did name-check many entertainers and politicians in the hour—among them, Nick Cannon, Robert De Niro, Jamie Foxx, Da Brat, Trick Daddy, Tory Lanez, Lizzo, Sharon Osbourne, P. Diddy, Wayne Brady, Hunter Biden, President Joe Biden, former President Donald Trump, and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis—none of it rose to quite the same salacious level as the fires he stoked in January.
For example, lampooning the FBI’s non-investigation into a bag of cocaine found inside the White House, Williams showed a giant photo of a baggie labeled “Hunter’s Blow” to suggest the true culprit, then added: “Hunter on crack. Joe asleep. The only person really working at the White house behind the scenes is Joe Biden’s German Shepherd named Commander.” He then showed a photo of the president with his pooch, while joking about how many Secret Service agents Commander Biden had bitten.
