Offscreen [Official Website]
Offscreen has been online since 1997, along with its French language sister journal Hors Champ. Based in Montréal, Offscreen is a wide-ranging film journal that covers film festivals, retrospectives, film forums, and both popular and more academic events. Part of our mandate is to cover the Montreal film scene, but within an international context. The scope of its content, and the type of material featured and promoted in Offscreen can be summarized as follows:
personal and independent film above big budget, formulaic film
the under-represented (young, up and coming filmmakers)
films with creative design and broad social commitment
local and Canadian films/filmmakers
Asian and alternative cinemas (horror, exploitation, esoteric,
experimental, documentary, etc.)
Unlike most online journals that offer the brief review format, Offscreen features extensive interviews, in-depth festival coverage, and lengthy, well-researched essays. The latter is in line with the guiding editorial policy
at Offscreen, which is to allow for the flexibility to feature rigorous, well-researched texts alongside material that does not fit into traditional scholarly formats (director interviews, film festival reports, DVD reviews, etc.).
In short, our goal is to produce intelligent, thoughtful, and combative film criticism, analysis, discussion, and theory. We are driven to this end because we feel strongly that, within today’s image saturated info-entertainment landscape, cinema needs to be rigorously discussed in order to continue being an important voice of cultural and artistic expression well into the 21st century.
Offscreen is edited and maintained by Donato Totaro, Ph.D, who has also been a film studies lecturer at Concordia University since 1990. Through the years Offscreen has been fortunate to establish a core group of fine writers who have contributed significantly to the development of the journal with consistently fine texts. They include: Peter Rist (Associate Professor in Film Studies, Ph.D), Randolph Jordan (MA, Ph.D Candidate), Roberto Curti (freelance writer based in Italy), and Daniel Garrett (freelance writer based in New York city). With luck, this group will continue to grow.
For copyright purposes, Offscreen has an ISSN number of 1712-9559.

Happy Birthday to Boris Karloff – Here Are His Ten Best Films [We Are Movie Geeks]
No other actor in the long history of horror has been so closely identified with the genre as Boris Karloff, yet he was as famous for his gentle heart and kindness as he was for his screen persona. William Henry Pratt was born on November 23, 1887, in Camberwell, London, England. He studied at London University in anticipation of a diplomatic career; however, he moved to Canada in 1909 and joined a theater company where he was bit by the acting bug. It was there that he adopted the stage name of “Boris Karloff.” He toured back and forth across the USA for over ten years in a variety of low-budget Theater shows and eventually ended up in Hollywood. Needing cash to support himself, Karloff landed roles in silent films making his on-screen debut in Chapter 2 of the 1919 serial The Masked Rider. His big break came when Howard Hawks cast him as a creepy convict in THE CRIMINAL CODE in 1930. Producers at Universal were looking for an actor to play the monster in their upcoming adaption of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Their main horror star Lon Chaney had died the year before and Bela Lugosi, starring in their hit DRACULA, turned down the role, so Karloff was offered the part. FRANKENSTEIN became an enormous success for the studio, and for its newest star whose name was not revealed until the final credits of the picture, and then only as “KARLOFF”. The role made Karloff a major box-office draw, the king of horror, heir to Lon Chaney’s throne, and he followed it up with THE MUMMY, THE MASK OF FU MANCHU, THE OLD DARK HOUSE, THE GHOUL, TOWER OF LONDON, and of course two sequels as the monster: BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN and SON OF FRANKENSTEIN. His star never faded and for the next several decades he reigned as Hollywood’s undisputed horror king. In the 1960’s, he teamed up with Roger Corman , Vincent Price and Peter Lorre for THE RAVEN and with Price and Lorre again for COMEDY OF TERRORS. Karloff continued working up until the very end, even while physically impaired and infirm, often performing from a wheelchair or with a cane. His last involvement of consequence came in 1968 with the critically acclaimed TARGETS. Karloff was well known as a genuinely kind and gentle soul off the screen.
Boris Karloff appeared in over 200 films in his five decades as an actor and here, according to We Are Movie Geeks, are his ten best:

Bad Movies [Official Website]
The goal of any movie is to entertain. This might sound strange, but who cares if a movie is poorly acted and filled with ridiculous special effects? What matters is if the movie keeps you entertained. The site's whole reason for being is to celebrate the quirky films that I find so enjoyable. Well, most of them are enjoyable. Some of the movies I watch cause me quite a bit of pain, but I love them anyway. Since we always hurt the ones we love, I will assume that the movies are loving me right back.
It all began in 1998 when I realized that there had to be others who loved the same kind of movies that I did. While everyone else was talking about the latest Hollywood blockbuster, I was telling them about low budget horror films, silly science fiction movies, absurd action flicks, and other cinematic attempts that defied categorization - movies that were just plain weird. The problem was finding other b-movie and cult film fanatics. Perhaps, just perhaps mind you, a website was the perfect way for people with an unusual hobby to indulge themselves. Badmovies.org was born on 22 June 1998.
Amusingly, my son Garrett was born on 22 June 2007, the website's 9th anniversary. No, I did not plan it that way.
There are quite a few guest reviews written by readers, but most of the articles came from my keyboard. This has always been a very personal endeavor. I want to share watching the movie with you, for the reviews to seem like you and I are watching it together. Both of us point out stuff that we noticed, make fun of bad acting, point out "Lessons Learned," and generally just have a lot of fun. For more than a decade, I have been watching and writing, watching and writing, and always hoping that what I am typing will be helpful to someone. It would be great if they decided to watch the movie, even just to appreciate how truly bad it really is, but, at the least, if I can give someone a good laugh, then all is well.
The good thing is that, over the years, my writing has improved from what I learned earning my PhD (Public High School Diploma). The great thing is that, over the years, the site has allowed me to speak with so many other fans of bad movies. Every month hundreds of thousands of visitors stop in to read the reviews. Hundreds of thousands! I had no idea when I started that it would ever go this far. My wife likes to remind me of what I said when the site was brand new; it was something along these lines: "I don't know if anybody will read any of this, but I hope somebody will."
At first, I paid for the site's upkeep out of my pocket. The cost was around $180 a month for the server, and that was not small change for a young Marine. However, eventually I needed to find a way for Badmovies.org to support itself, and I began placing advertisements on the site. What I love to see is movie-related advertisements. Those fit in perfectly; I wish there were more of them. I really like the Amazon.com links to purchase the mov

British Horror Films [Official Website]
Founded in 2000
In the 1960s and 70s, the British film industry was a thing to behold. They were making films like nobody's business, and the things were popular as well.
It's hard to believe it now, but back in those heady days people couldn't get enough of what Hammer, Amicus and the rest had to offer, be it vampire vixens, witchfinding generals, or (ahem) Robin Askwith in his red pants.
So welcome to British Horror Films, a site which glories in, reviews and comments on horror films made in Britain, or by British people with British money in other places.
The site is supposed to be lighthearted, so occasionally you might find I've taken the mickey out of a particularly cherished classic. Please bear in mind that I love this stuff as much as you do, but occasionally, it has to be said, these films were crap.

‘The Walking Dead’ Season 11 Review & Series Summary [Bounding Into Comics]
After 11 seasons, the original Walking Dead TV show has come to a close, and many might argue that it was a long time coming. After numerous trials, tribulations, grisly killings, brutal murders, and more characters than the average viewer could keep track of, season 11 concludes a dull story with a particularly well-executed ending.

Halloween Ends may be a disappointment to a segment of the lifelong Shape fandom, if not a bane to their existence, but the mixed feelings about what was supposed to be the conclusion of a trilogy are nothing compared to the allegedly dirty and disappointing treatment by its lead, Jamie Lee Curtis, to actresses who came after her.
