While e-commerce in Saudi Arabia was growing slowly, a recent study by Northwestern University in Qatar on media and Internet use in various Middle Eastern countries showed great promise for future market expansion. This study calculated that 8% of Saudis regularly made reservations for travel online, 6% used online banking, and 7% regularly made purchases online. Even though these seem like small figures, they show that Saudi Arabia performs significantly better than other Middle Eastern nations when it comes to fostering trust in online marketplaces. In fact, after $520 million in online sales in 2011, the Kingdom was named the second largest E-commerce market in the GCC in 2013.

Greater levels of trust in online payment systems are largely responsible for the Saudi E-commerce market's success and ongoing growth over other Middle Eastern markets. Saudis claim to be less afraid to use credit cards, and they have access to many different payment gateways (PayPal, CashU, etc.) to guarantee the security of their money.

Almost half of the respondents to Mastercard's 2014 Online Shopping Behaviour Study on Saudi Arabia reported using the Internet for shopping, and 80 percent of them expressed "high satisfaction" with the market's quality and experience. Additionally, they discovered that while foreign websites account for about 45% of Saudi Arabian online sales, more and more Saudis are turning to domestic vendors. All of these figures show that Saudi Arabia has the potential for a growing market in addition to having the infrastructure required for successful e-commerce.
