In today’s lovely little Drawing Inspiration episode, I shall be speedpainting the maniacally vicious Gertrude from Skottie Young’s comic series “I Hate Fairyland”.

If you haven’t had a chance to read “I Hate Fairyland”, I highly recommend it, particularly if you’re into dark comedy and over-the-top violence disguised as whimsical candyland adventure.

Gertrude’s darkness and violence came from spending decades in a hopeless situation in a world where everyone kind of hates her, and that’s why I find her so fascinating. She’s clearly out of her mind and a danger to everyone around her, guilty and innocent alike, but you’re able to get why she’s like that, and given the same circumstances, who wouldn’t end up like here, you know what I mean?

That kind of deep and tormented characterization wrapped up in a zany whimsical happyland satire is ultimately what I greatly enjoy about “I Hate Fairyland”, and the hilarious situation of a horrid and insane murder machine trapped in the body of a seemingly harmless child is the lovely icing on the cake.

Welcome back to another riveting addition to Drawing Inspiration where today I shall be speedpainting Retsuko from the Netflix series Aggretsuko.

Aggretsuko is a series I enjoy on a different level from other cartoons that I watch. While there are a good handful of shows that are near and dear to my heart that I have a great emotional attachment toward, Aggretsuko is actually not one of them. So why the hell am I even talking about it if I don’t greatly enjoy it? Because I enjoy it less as an emotionally engaging masterpiece and more as a nice, chill, and comfy show.

That being said, the main character Retsuko, is one of the few points in the show that I get a more of the aforementioned engaging sense of excitement from. I find the whole idea of a mousy put-upon accountant venting her frustrations through throat-ripping death metal karaoke to be hilarious. For you see, within all of us is a stubby little red panda in a stressful corporate cubicle job with a slave-driving boss and an overbearing mother that slowly erodes our fragile sanity until it leaves us with no other recourse than to let out our festering mental illness as a shrieking tidal wave of emotional destruction at a local karaoke bar that probably should’ve cut us off the alcohol about three hours prior.

Today’s Making Cartoons video will be another episode of Drawing Inspiration. This time, the speedpaint subject shall be the one and only Tina Belcher from Bob’s Burgers.

Tina is my favorite character on the show, and a character whom I wish to draw inspiration from because she has a very unique and captivating personality, and I understand that describing someone like Tina as having a “unique and captivating personality” would sound rather unfitting to people who know what she’s like, but let me explain myself.

If I were to describe Tina Belcher in one word, I would say that she is a “weirdo”. She’s neurotic, socially inept, somewhat obsessive, and brazenly perverted. And I love it. Tina is a glorious hot mess that cannot be contained, and honestly I don’t even think she tries to contain it that much, and I respect that. Basically, all that weirdness contained in one weird girl makes her a laugh and a half to watch.

Today in Making Cartoons, I’m going to be taking a different approach for the next handful of videos and exploring some existing cartoon characters while giving brief analyses of what I like about them and what I’d like to learn from them.

I call this impromptu experiment “Drawing Inspiration”, and the first speedpaint shall feature Starlight Glimmer from “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic”.

Starlight Glimmer, for those of you normal people who know nothing of the current iteration of MLP, is one of the major recurring characters of the show that wasn’t even introduced until season 5 of the series, and when she was introduced, she was actually a villain, but though she started off as a villain, she was reformed through the course of the show until eventually joining the main cast as a friendly character.

And it’s precisely because of this character arc that not only is Starlight Glimmer my current favorite character, but I also wish to draw inspiration from her.

Starlight is a complicated individual. Remember, she started out as a villain. Her whole schtick was fighting against the main characters until learning the error of her ways, and that’s fine and dandy, but what I really admire is that long after she reforms and becomes friendly toward the other characters, we still see inklings of her evil side. And that is eternally fascinating to me.

#VidCon2019, baby! This was not my first time going, but it was my first time going as a creator, and I gotta say that it was the most fun I’ve had VidCon.

So here’s to everyone I got to meet whether they be big or small creators. I’ll link everybody’s channels that I can, so do forgive me (and shout out) if I forget anybody!

Greetings, dear comrades. Welcome back to another rousing episode of Drawing with Boris. In this program, we shall be drawing the figure of Catra; notorious scheming villain and sexually confused nutcase from new remake cartoon for Netflix intertubes streaming purposes: She-Ra.

Boris is back, baby! I figured that since I rounded out the first batch of “Making Cartoons” on a nice clean number 10, I’d crank out another “Drawing With Boris” video for my (and your) amusement.

I can only do one of these every blue moon due to how much time they take to create, compounded by the fact that I essentially have two full-time jobs, but I’m glad I got to make this one.

“Making Cartoons” will resume next week with some slight variations, but until then ... enjoy the content, comrades.

What ho, citizens? In today’s episode of Making Cartoons I’m going to be doing a bit of a temporary endcap to the “Meanie in Happyland” segment of this series by introducing a character that isn’t fully fleshed out as of this moment. The sweet and kindly, the gentle and lovable Mamma Avvy.

Mamma Avvy is a critter residing in the happy universe of Yewforia, who also happens to be the mortal mother of Princess Solara. But because Mamma Avvy hasn’t been fully fleshed out, her role in the story and the nuances of her character is to be determined.

Right now I’m thinking about having her be Solara’s unofficial top-level advisor, someone who doesn’t have an official seat on some sort of royal council, yet holds the greatest trust with Solara because, well, she’s her mom.

As she evolves, I have no doubt she’ll have more roles to play and more fun times to be had, but in the meantime please enjoy the wild speculation and baseless accusations.

What's good, people?

Today’s episode of Making Cartoons features a very special character in my cartoon “Meanie in Happyland”. The eccentric, the effervescent, the moondreamer herself: Princess Solara.

Princess Solara is the current soverign deity of Yewforia, as well as the founder of the Happy Helpers. After the passing of her father, King Guthenbert, who was also the original god of Yewforia, Princess Solara assumed the responsibilities of rulership and has basically been running the place ever since.

And as of this point in the story, that is all our characters know about her.

Princess Solara is a character that’s not supposed to be a typical conventional princess, and also someone who’s flighty and offbeat demeanor is meant to be a bit of a contrast to Adon’s staunch warrior-like stoicism. And even though she won’t appear fully in the pilot, I still want to communicate the basics about her as a means of laying down some groundwork for future stories.
