The popular understanding of The Crusades in the West is that they involved barbaric, violent Christians invading the peaceful and enlightened Islamic world. Films like Kingdom of Heaven and Mankind: The Story of Us reinforce this narrative. But the truth is the reality of the Crusades is much, much different. In fact, it's the polar opposite. The Birmingham manuscript, discovered and prominently covered in the news in 2015, was celebrated and touted as a complete manuscript to actually come from the time of the prophet Muhammad - something that has been sorely lacking for Islam. In reality, the Birmingham “manuscript” falls far short of being a full manuscript. In fact, it is only two pages comprised of 33 verses pulled from 3 separate chapters. Watch as Al Fadi and Dr. Jay review the “manuscript” and conclude not only do the pages fit into another known manuscript, but the content itself predates Islam rendering it inconsequential.

In recent years, Wikipedia has frequently picked up some controversy for being less than reliable. Last time, I showed you how one editor in a niche corner of online Welsh history could completely distort reality, and create a king who didn't exist.
This time, however, is different. This time, the history of Wales has not just been morphed by a lone editor, but by a series of historical mistakes spanning over 3 centuries.
Many online articles and websites have continually perpetuated this myth, but none of them are at fault for it's creation.

Thomas Sowell discusses economic inequality, racial inequality, and the myths that have continued to falsely describe the system of poverty among different racial and economic classes. He explains the economic theories behind these pervasive myths and proposes fact-based solutions for seemingly intractable situations.

Sowell discusses his early life as a high school dropout and his first full-time job as a Western Union messenger delivering telegrams. He admits to flirting with Marxism in his early twenties as he first tried to grapple with the housing inequality he saw across the neighborhoods of New York City. Marxism, he says, was the only explanation he could find at the time. He went on to serve in the Marine Corps before continuing his education in economics at Harvard and earning a master’s at Columbia and a PhD at the University of Chicago.

Sowell’s first job after his receiving his PhD in economics was working for the Department of Labor, and he says it was there that he realized Marxism was not the answer. He argues that the government has its own institutional interests in inequality that cannot be explained through Marxism. He began to be discouraged by Marxism and the government in general and began searching for better economic ideas and solutions (the free market).

“The right lacks vision. They play a rearguard game. They don't have a compelling story to tell young people. And because they're conscientious, conservatives are conscientious, it's easy to hoist them on the petard of guilt. And the psychopathic narcissists of the radical left are unbelievably good at that.”

On the personal versus the political:

“I think you have to get your psychological house in order before you can be even remotely effective politically in the fundamental sense. Otherwise, you're just a tool of ideology or your own ego.”

On Britain:

“English common law is a complete bloody miracle … what a phenomenal accomplishment. And so, yes, I think that makes Britain singular and worthy of tremendous admiration … It's a country that's suffering from far too much guilt at the moment.”

On Twitter:

“Twitter isn't optional, it's how I sample the culture. Is it a biased sample? Probably.”

On slavery:

“It was the British who decided hands down that slavery was wrong and then did something about it. And that is documented historical reality.”

On the EU and France:

“A lot of the centralising tendency that's characteristic of the EU can be laid at the foot of the same spirit that motivated the French, the French revolutionaries … I see the French Revolution in itself as a reflection of something deeper, which is the continuing manifestation of the spirit of Cain.”
