Irrational and 2K Games' latest hit, BioShock Infinite has been met with a hell of a mixed response. From those claiming it's the greatest FPS since... well, the original Bioshock, to those claiming that Elizabeth is pure Waifu material. B-Mask of Cheshire Cat Studios takes all of these stances into account and analyses what we can glean from this — and exactly how much Ken Levine's new attempt at philosophical debate with guns holds up to scrutiny.

The CCS Halloween Horror Game Fuck-Up 2018 - Part 2.

Off the heels of Wade's panicky speed-run of "Spooky's Jump Scare Mansion", Nat brings out the big guns with one of the worst horror games ever made: "Clock Tower II: The Struggle Within". And she does it to piss off LaughingMan, who had the unfortunate experience of watching her play the game twice through on seperate previous occasions. Now she's bringing the pain to the masses with this green-bloodied, child-bashing, snail-paced gore-fest (or should we say bore-fest? *insert Crypt Keeper laugh*). At least the riffing of the CCS crew makes the ill-fated Japanese horror game slightly more bearable.

left to right: Aaron (alcohol poisoning postmortem poltergeist), Wade (Danny DeVito as Frank Reynolds, 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia'), Fuboo (Zarcharie, 'OFF'), Calamity/Puppers (The Spirit of Halloweens Past), Nat (Harley Quinn, 'Arkham Asylum'), LaughingMan (Negan, 'The Walking Dead')

Nat and LaughingMan play Friday the 13th: The Game. The Fuboo spectates via Skype. The crew discusses the merits of having fat friends (that you can outrun), Nat has a horrible time playing as Jason, and LaughingMan can't admit when he's wrong. LaughingMan also reveals the (rather anti-climactic) story behind how Jason's iconic hockey mask came to be.

Guillermo del Toro and 'At the Mountains of Madness': A Reality? | CCS After Hours Podcast

Renowned horror/fantasy visionary director, Guillermo Del Toro (Hellboy, Blade 2, Pan's Labyrinth, The Strain, Pacific Rim) is wrapping up his latest film, Crimson Peaks, and is a co-writer of the
FX video series based on the book "The Strain". At a recent f-bomb laden Comic Con Del Toro praises his recent success and support from Legendary Pictures and Universal Studios. He then asked his ecstatic fans whether they want two potential new projects: "Hellboy 3" and "H.P. Lovecraft's 'At the Mountains of Madness'". Both were met with loud applause by fans.

And that means that LaughingMan and CineMax will probably be shitting on everyone else's praise. Being fans of BOTH H.P. Lovecraft and Guillermo Del Toro, CineMax and LaughingMan praise the pairing, no argument there. However, considering Guillermo Del Toro's past reservations about a PG-13 rating for "At the Mountains of Madness", as well as issues involving studio interference to make the movie more 'mainstream' (adding a romantic sub-plot, making Tom Cruise the lead character, etc), they fully understand his caution. And given the fact that the themes of H.P. Lovecraft's "At the Mountains of Madness" is very close to the themes of John Carpenter's "The Thing" and the controversial and confusing "Prometheus", LaughingMan and CineMax felt it necessary to air their thoughts (whether you want them or not).

No doubt, Lovecraft material isn't often that suited for the silver screen, but if anyone could pull it off it would be Guillermo Del Toro. However, would direct 1:1 adaptations of Lovecraft stories be
suited for the theatres, or perhaps an X-Files styled television series with heavy Lovecraftian influences fare better?

Ever since Double Fine Productions' astounding success with Broken Age (formerly known as Double Fine Adventure) a year ago, Kickstarter has become somewhat of a posterchild for crowdfuning on the Internet. And while the idea of an 'Online Darwinism' platform where only the strongest and most innovative ideas get to see the light of day via a direct financial support from the consumers does sound enticing on paper, the actual execution of it leaves much to be desired.

We've all heard countless success stories from aspiring filmmakers, game developers and musicians who got to make their dream projects a reality. But what about the myriad of terrible projects that still make at least three times their desired goal thanks to the naïveté of the Kickstarter userbase? What about all the outrageous scams that were seconds away from pilfering the dishonestly received money and vanishing into thin air? And let's not forget about all the cases of unceremonious e-begging by Hollywood celebrities who should already have sufficient funds and/or connections to launch their projects without the need of Kickstarter but still decided to exploit it.

Kickstarter represents a worthy cause, and we here at Cheshire Cat Studios are totally behind it. That said, they really need to start screening whom they grant permission to open up a campaign on their site lest they want to end up in danger of losing their credibility.

In this After Hours episode, The Fuboo is joined by CCS’s newest recruit, Katie B, to talk about one of survival horror’s biggest titles: the Silent Hill series. They discuss why Kojima’s P.T. (or “Silent Hills”) game seemed promising, and then take a look back into the history of the Silent Hill series as a whole.

As hardcore Silent Hill fans, Fuboo and Katie believe that only the first 4 titles should be considered ‘true’ Silent Hill games, and they examine the essential components needed to make a game really fit the ‘Silent Hill’ label. They also discuss the often misunderstood importance of the mysterious cult that operates in the town, and why a focus on the occult is crucial to making a Silent Hill game work.

After all, many people are confused about what the powers of the town actually do. The backstory of Silent Hill is basically about a spiritual power that becomes tainted by the horrible practices of the cult. Before the cult arrived, the area around Toluca Lake was inhabited by Native Americans, who worshiped the spiritual power as a god. It was Alessa’s 7 year long torment under Dahlia’s spell that turned the spiritual power into something nasty. The underlying cause of every game is the spiritual power and the way it influences the psyches of the characters. Silent Hill is not a ‘mystical judge’ who seeks to torment those who have done wrong until they confess to their sins, as many have been lead to believe. This was only the plot of Silent Hill 2, but Fuboo and Katie speculate about why it was this particular plot that stuck with everyone, rather than the events of the other 3 games.

The idea that only the first 4 games are ‘real’ Silent Hill games is a topic of hot debate among fans. Do you agree with the ladies of CCS? Or do you think the newer titles have something great to offer in their own way? What do you hope to see from the next Silent Hill title? Let us know below in the comments!

Suicide Squad: Extended Cut Is a SCAM | CheshireCatStudios Video Podcast

Recently news broke that despite David Ayer's earlier protestations that the theatrical version of 'Suicide Squad' is indeed his true vision of the movie, and that there is not going to be any director's cut coming to home media any time soon, guess what? There is indeed going to be an extended version of Suicide Squad after all. That's right folks! With just a couple extra minutes of footage, as well as $30 of your hard earned money, all of Suicide Squad's problems can be resolved once and for all!

— — —

LaughingMan: Is this what they consider the DC Expanded Universe? Every single fucking movie that they have has a Director's Cut version.

CineMax: Yes.

LaughingMan: It's like movie DLC. For $30 extra you can get the REAL movie. Not the shit you saw in the theaters.

CineMax: This is outrageous, and I'll tell you why: This is basically a money extortion scheme. What Warner Bros. does is it releases and extensibly final version of a movie to the theaters, and then it has the viewers pay to be quality testers. In addition to reaping the financial rewards, then DC takes all of the criticism that the movie has accrued, and then tries to slap together some ultimate version that addresses all the problems. But then of course they sell this for an additional cost.

LaughingMan: You get the patch for an extra $30 on Blu-Ray.

Nat: Unless they forked out loads of money to replace the woman who plays Enchantress I don't see how they're going to fix the film's problems.

LaughingMan: I know. She's doing this belly-dance shit... You know, like, those inflatable epileptic things that are outside of a car lot? That's what the Enchantress looked like to me. "I am the Enchantress!"

CineMax: She's both possessed by a demon and epileptic at the same time.

LaughingMan: But according to what I’ve seen in the trailer, they’re teasing more Jared Leto and Margot Robbie interactions. Like they’re actually going to show more of the stuff that was left on the cutting room floor regarding Joker and Harley Quinn and their quote unquote “romance”. Although from what I understand I doubt they’re going to repair the larger issues which are… Joker and Harley Quinn have always had an abusive relationship. And when they showed that to test audiences they balked.

CineMax: But remember that this is a move for the FANS.

LaughingMan: Yes, exactly. Not the popcorn munching masses, it’s for the fans!

Nat: Yeah, exactly. That’s why they changed Enchantress’s backstory. That’s why they changed all the costumes. And you know what? I think that if it is just an extra 13 minutes of just Jared Leto scenes, that’s still not going to be enough of Jared Leto’s scenes. He says there’s enough in there to potentially make a whole Joker movie.

CineMax: Well apparently from what I heard he had a very different idea of what the final product would even look like, so I'm not sure if all of those scenes will even mesh well with this Deadpool-slash-Guardians of the Galaxy mashup that DC executives were apparently going for with Suicide Squad.

LaughingMan: In a panic! They're like "we gotta do dark and gritty!" Well "Oh Shit, Guardians of the Galaxy is making millions, people like it, and it has a muti-million dollar soundtrack. So that means that in the first five minutes we need to cram in five different fucking songs." And then of course Deadpool comes out and it's like, "Ohh! Captain Boomerang has to have a unicorn, too! And he's gotta be a little bit on the sexual-deviant side, and we need more comedy folks! WE NEED MORE COMEDY!" And I'm just glad that they didn't do any real fourth-wall breaking. That would have been a fucking mess.

Nat: Well I don’t know what kind of logic they used to take out Harley Quinn and The Joker’s relationship, when that is what’s at the heart-

CineMax: Feminist Logic!

Nat, has a lengthy discussion as to why LaughingMan, someone who couldn't be arsed to get caught up in the melodrama of The Walking Dead, is actually tuning in to watch the series.

The short answer is "Negan", played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan. The baseball bat wielding villain not only oozes charisma, but, despite what the critics at Forbes believe, has a captivating story-arch that not only sets him apart from the other characters portrayed in the past seasons, but who is possibly saving The Walking Dead from itself. Between the onslaught of violence and character deaths that should come with a suicide hot-line number at the end of every episode, Negan offers not only dark humor levity, but a complex character dynamic that, according to the original comic series, should begin rearing its head in the episodes to come. The short answer is: "Negan"

Negan is a complex villain, a conqueror and dictator that is working to build a functioning society using the savage tactics necessary in a brutal post-apocalyptic, zombie-infested world. After all, it’s not the zombies that the protagonists often find themselves at odds with, but the other desperate survivors in this chaotic landscape. And for society to be put back in order, a brutal character that can unite these packs of raiders and survivors, and bind them by a set of laws and principals, is necessary. Enter Negan, a troubled man who believes that “the strong should protect the weak” and punishes crimes like adultery and rape with violent efficiency. However, Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s portrayal of Negan in The Walking Dead is possibly distorting the character of Negan that the fans of the graphic novel have come to know and love as the character seems to have devolved from a barbaric alpha leader to more of a psychopath that enjoys inflicting violence a little too much.

It's been a long time coming, but on the launch day of the Nintendo Switch (in limited quantities to manufacture a shortage, apparently) LaughingMan, CineMax and Katie are expressing concern. It appears that Nintendo is once again chasing the unicorn that was the Nintendo Wii, and could potentially be falling into the same trap as the Nintendo Wii U: Focusing on hardware and forging shaky, face-value alliances with third-party publishers rather than reassuring consumers that they can compete against the Playstation 4, the XBONE and their respective variants.

Note: Katie B did not animate the mouths. We are simplifying production to get content out faster, cheaper, and more efficiently.

The comic book movie roundtable continues as the CCS crew divulges their hopes and expectations for Marvel's The Avengers 2, discusses Fox's outrageous mistreatment of the Merc with the Mouth (Deadpool), share their frustration with Hollywood's petty behind-the-scenes squabbles over franchise rights (Daredevil, Fantastic Four), and even touch upon the sensitive issue of gratuitous race-bending. Hoo boy.

Part 1 may have been by and large an enlightening lecture on the history of the superhero movie genre by Professor Newsome. Part 2, however, is where the real fun begins!

The Mortal Kombat: Rebirth trailer, created by director Kevin Tancharoen, was the adrenaline shot that the Mortal Kombat franchise desperately needed. Mortal Kombat: Rebirth brought a new perspective and the potential for deeper character development through its gritty, realistic approach that departed from the original Mortal Kombat video games.

However, CineMax, LaughingMan, and STAR feel that the official Mortal Kombat webseries, Mortal Kombat: Legacy, has sacrificed the substance and unique story-telling direction -seen in Mortal Kombat: Rebirth - for impressive action sequences and style. So join CineMax (Mockbuster Mockery), LaughingMan (Cheshire Cat Studios), and STAR (Silver Screen Podcast) in this hilarious and witty roundtable video podcast as they give their impressions, concerns, and critiques of Mortal Kombat: Legacy.

DISCLAIMER: Please do not misconstrue this video as a direct onslaught on the entire brony community. The staff of Cheshire Cat Studios is fully aware that every fanbase, group or community has its rotten apples. As such, the intent of this video is not to vilify but rather scrutinize how the actions of some of the members of the community have quickly transformed 'bronies' from just another fanbase into one of the most controversial groups both on the 'Net and in real life.

It's been months since we expressed our indignation over the exploits of the worst of fanboy antics, but a recent news article has resurrected our ire towards — you guessed it! — the radical elements of My Little Pony's Brony community. This time an artist of erotic My Little Pony pictures is sent a cease and desist letter by a man who claims to have married Twilight Sparkle.

Rather than simply lambast the fringe fans like so many before them, B-Mask, LaughingMan and CineMax dissect the MLP phenomenon and offer possible explanations for the rise and apparent decline of the Brony movement. They also refer to their own personal experiences with the series.

WHAT WE'RE ALL LAUGHING ABOUT IN THE END:
https://gfycat.com/InfamousCostlyHarrierhawk

True Detective Season 1, starring Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey, was the breakout cable drama of 2014. The dark twisted tale of two southern detectives traversing the dark corners of the Louisianan bayou, encountering ritualistic murders, ancient voodoo cults, and backwater drug trades, while hunting for the almost mythical figure, 'The Yellow King', earned True Detective its Emmy nominations and the critical praise it rightly deserved. And as the self-contained story of Rust Chole and Marty Hart came to a close, the net was ablaze with eager anticipation and speculation on the various clues as to the plot of season 2. However, in the pessimistic, dark recesses of the human mind, not many really expected Season 2 to surpass the nihilistic brilliance of its predecessor.

And yet, as the very first episode of Season 2 came and went, the net was already seemingly condemning the series for dozens of illegitimate reasons. Regardless how well it was stressed in the entertainment press that Season 2 would be a separate storyline, and that Rust and Marty would not be returning, it seems as though this was somehow a genuine letdown for some fans. As the second season of True Detective came to a close, the popular consensus was that it felt inherently weak in comparison to the first season. Popular criticisms were, almost paradoxically, that the story was both too straightforward as well as too contrived. Some who had liked the Weird Fiction angle felt disappointed that the series wasn't dipping its toes in one literary horror mythos or another

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Movie Analysis - #Thwip! | Beyond Pictures

B-Mask's Twitter: https://twitter.com/B_Mask_

Spider-Man is one of the world's most endearing comic book characters — and perhaps the most mocked superhero movie franchises. From the Sam Raimi trilogy to Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man films, and from Tobey Maguire to Andrew Garfield, B-Mask looks into not why the new movie sucks, but also why the Spider-Man movie franchise just isn't that captivating.

B-Mask, a long-time fan of the famous wallcrawler, takes a critical look not just at Marc Webb's latest The Amazing Spider-Man 2 film, but rather the entire Spider-Man movie franchise as a whole. From the misuse of Spider-Man's love interests and his supporting cast, to the questionable interpretation of some of his most iconic villains, to the outrageous misrepresentation of some of the most pivotal themes and messages of the source material — B-Mask addresses the numerous issues that have plagued the Spider-Man film series for more than a decade now. All of which, unfortunately, have been often overlooked due to the general audience's desire to see Marvel's webhead on the big screen. At any cost.

P.S. Don't worry Dan Slott. You're safe. For now...

White Knight Game Journalism: The Dissonance Between the Gaming Press and Gamers | CCS Podcast After Hours #4

A lot of video game journalists are wagging fingers at both the gamers and game studios, accusing them of misogyny, racism and other misdemeanours left, right and centre. But how fair are these accusations? CineMax and B-Mask discuss the current trend of white-knight tactics employed by a number of online video game journalists, and the repercussions by both gamers and critics that have arisen from these seemingly noble crusades. Hey there. We're called Cheshire Cat Studios, and we're basically a group of friends trying to promote critical thinking and healthy skepticism via our content. And if we can make our viewers laugh along the way with our uncensored and often unabashed style of comedy - all the better.

Our main flagship series is the CCS Video Podcast. It's an 'animated' roundtable chat kind of show where we sit down and try to scrutinize this or that issue related to the entertainment industry every episode. Then there's Extended Play, which is a spin-off of the CCS Video Podcast and is actually closer to a more traditional audio-only podcast, where various members of CCS pair off and discuss the latest bit of news from the entertainment industry.
