Sniffer Customs Electric Guitar

In final video of Mockingbird Ultra Mod Series, I remove temporarily installed DiMarzio X2N in bridge position, and DiMarzio PAF Master in neck position, and replace with set of Dimarzio Titan humbuckers (F-spaced in bridge position, nickel covers, black pole pieces) as originally planned.

I also install mini switches to select parallel or series wiring for each pickup. I am not big fan of coil "splitting"...turning off coil is just disabling perfectly good pickup to me. However, having ability to switch pickup into parallel mode does give a sound that may have a place...in those times I am not looking for MOST GAIN through METAL ZONE pedal. ๐Ÿ˜‚ Very usable sound, to me! You may easily try this wiring on your humbucker...I have provided clean and easy to read series to parallel humbucker wiring diagram at beginning of video. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

Horrible apocalyptic noise in background is Squier Bass VI (with Sniffer Heavy Metal Conversion Package installed) being run through Digitech Metal Master pedal and DigiTech Polara reverb. If you don't have Digitech Metal Master pedal, you need to get one...it is fun...especially if you don't know how to actually play guitar. ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

In video six of series, I re-install StayTrem stainless arm to tremolo, and re-assemble unit using all stainless fasteners. Tremolo tension adjustment screw is replaced with socket head stainless bolt and nylon washer for easier adjustments. Vintage white tip on arm was replaced with black tip. My plan was to try LaBella Bass VI FLAT wound stings on this setup, but core of one of these snapped like a twig during installation. That's okay, I think wound rounds are better suited for this Bass VI. Flat wounds also had wrapping on ends that did not play well with locking tuners. $50 thrown into trash; new 767-6S round wounds installed, back to business. Saddle intonation screws on StayTrem bridge were replaced with socket head stainless bolts with nylon washers for easier adjustment. ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

Background noise is Ibanez Artcore AS73 semi-hollow, played through NUX Solid Studio IR/Amp Sim, Boss RT-20 rotary pedal, NUX Time Core Delay, and DigiTech Polara Reverb.

In fourth video in series, I solder wires to components, to achieve series wiring of all pickups. "Strangle Switch" is re-purposed as blower type switch for bridge pickup, that also allows tone control when bridge pickup selector is activated (no tone control when bridge pickup selector switch is off). 500K linear taper Bourns pot used for volume, and 250K audio taper Bourns pot used for tone. For third video in series, I mount these Seymour Duncan single coil Jaguar pickups. SD Quarter Pound has fat pole pieces that do not extend into pickup cover (SD says to use without cover). So, I shave off top of cover to make it fit. ๐Ÿ˜‚ Why? Because I want to retain "claws", and claws fit into covers. However, I do not connect ground wire of claw to ground wire of pickup, due to fact I am wiring pickups in "series"....and this would cause big problem. Instead, claw is isolated from pickup with rubber adhesive gasket material, and claw is grounded to cavity shielding. ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

Federal workers. Federal contractors. Military service men and women.
Refuse. Resist. The time is now.

Was past due to replace electronics components in old Memphis Stratocaster. I retain dirt cheap FLEOR hot rails humbuckers, because I like them a lot...and because nothing else fits I may find fits in pickguard. In this video I also place some Kraftex copper foil in cavities and on back of pickguard. Humbuckers really don't need this, in my opinion, but it sure doesn't hurt.

I use Bourns 500k audio log pots for tone controls, because cavity space is small. I use a CTS 500k linear taper pot for volume...because that is what I had in box. I prefer linear taper for volume, as audio log just sound like on and off switch.

I use 3-way switch, since these are humbucker pickups. But even with single coil, I think I still prefer 3-way switch. Very impressed with this Kaish switch, which I used due to limited space. It makes for organized wiring, and even has ground lugs. I would put these even in expensive model strat with some confidence.)

.022uf Orange Drop Cap for tone.

Pure Tone mono jack used for output.

Strings are Ernie Ball 2221 10-13-17-26-36-46

Also install new set of clean white Fender knobs. I do not think Fender knob get better with age...they just get disgusting. ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

In second video clip of series, I shield cavities of Squier Bass VI with copper foil tape. A LOT of copper foil tape. I mean, way more copper tape than is needed for five guitars. You do not need so much copper foil to shield your guitar. I just get carried away...copper foil tape is very pretty. And, my career as professional guitar player has made me extremely wealthy. Sometimes heavy metal recording studio attempts to pay me large sums of Bitcoin for session work, but I demand payment in copper foil tape. ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

Sniffer Disclaimer: No guitar NEEDS modification. What makes guitar sound good to YOU is play guitar way it sounds good to YOU! (In my case, my playing always sound very bad, haha.) I modify guitar because I like to modify guitar. I build guitar because I like to build guitar. Some persons it seems may be "triggered" by expensive components installed to inexpensive guitar. Don't be upset. It is fun. And most of all, young person who wants to buy guitar should not be discourage from inexpensive guitar model, because internet video makes them think this guitar needs new components right from start. They don't. None do. If you want to just play guitar, just open box, and play guitar. It will be great. ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

For seventh video, I assemble guitar using DiMarzio X2N in bridge position, and DiMarzio PAF Master in neck position.

DiMarzio repaired defective Titan pickup I purchased from eBay "authorized re-seller" no question asked, and returned it very quickly. Since this video, Titan pickups have been installed, as well as parallel - series mini switches for each pickup. 1980's style terrible techno music was played on this guitar with Titan neck pickup active, Behringer Model D synth, and Alesis SR18 drum machine. โ€‹๐Ÿ˜ˆ

New Leader of U.S.A. gives speech at inauguration to Party members. Leader Biden speaks of heroic confrontation with terrorist called by name "Corn-Pop", during battle of American Revolution. (Corn Pop is name of Early American period breakfast food consumed by dangerous Capitalist rebel groups.)

If you want to skip five minutes of listening to horrible guitar sounds, here is summary:
I put helical thread repair insert into sustain block of 1980's imitation Stratocaster. That's it.

I think method of tremolo attachment for Fender Strat type is some kind of curse upon mankind. They are already loose when they are brand new, and only get worse. "Fix" for most people is to put teflon plumber tape on threads...which just makes me CRINGE! Why do they continue to make such poor design garbage?? I guess...because we continue to purchase...because our idols played this model guitar...so we like them.

This Memphis strat has some bizarre feature: 50mm (2 inch) string spacing...as in 10mm between string. As far as I may find, there is NO manufacture of ANY replacement strat tremolos, blocks, etc, with 50mm string spacing. So, with stripped tremolo arm threads, I had only one shot at repair. Only solution I could think of was using a helical threaded insert. Zinc blocks are soft like warm butter, and material around arm hole was already very thin. But, I could think of no other solution, and took my chances with power drill. Drill bit cut through this zinc block like it was not there...but block maintained structure. Installation of helicoil successful!

Most important thing to note; if you also find yourself with loose wiggle stick, I think best is first to replace zinc block with steel or brass block. It will still be loose to some degree, as they ALL are, but at least it will be new and better. But, if you want to try to install helicoil in your block, get the longest helicoil. They come in various lengths, but typically "1" and "3" lengths. "1" length is diameter x 1, "3" length is diameter x 3. That simple. You want as much thread as possible, so choose 3. Longer would be better, but I don't think there is longer. Maybe they can be stacked? I don't know, but if you stacked, and threads didn't match, it would be difficult to remove coils.

Good luck! This worked well enough, that I may repeat process on all strat tremolos, even on new units as pre-emptive measure against wear. ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

In video six of series, you may see installation of electronic components.

Original plan included following pickups installed:
NECK: DiMarzio DP258 Titan with Nickel Cover/Black Pole Pieces
BRIDGE: DiMarzio DP102BC X2N Black/Cream

Unfortunate, but Titan pickup was defective! Instead of purchasing directly from DiMarzio, I purchased on eBay from "authorized DiMarzio dealer", because I thought it may be faster than typical custom pickup order from DiMarzio. Seller had good selection of pre-configured pickups, so I took chance. I lost. After installation, I found internal wiring was shorting to pickup housing ground. Seller said they do not accept returns/refund, that you must send directly to DiMarzio. DiMarzio repaired (did not replace) pickup with no questions, and sent back to me VERY quickly. I have not tested to see if repair was successful, but I have learned lesson...always buy custom pickup directly from DiMarzio, and have some patience to test all pickups BEFORE installation into guitar!

In meantime, I installed lower output DiMarzio DP260BC+BK PAF Master Neck I had in stock for another project. I like this pickup very much...sound is great, and low out means you may go from screaming lead to subdued rhythm sound using pickup selector toggle switch, without adjusting volume knob.

I would still like to try Titan pickups, however, and may install Titans in bridge and neck positions of this guitar in future project. X2N is awesome for distortion, but "sound" is nothing special, and not good for clean sound in case I decide I want to play some John Denver music. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Also defective was gold Switchcraft toggle switch. I had to bend contact points to correct operation...a difficult problem to diagnose and questionable fix. Quality of Switchcraft toggles seems hit or miss...they often feel very loose/cheap. Dirt cheap metric threaded toggles often feel better quality than Switchcraft, in my simple opinion.

But, at least it works now, and I can pretend to play guitar on it....and everything sounds good in my ears when I use Metal Zone pedal. ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

I set out with haphazard intention of making quick, rough, unfinished pedal board for mini pedals. I don't use mini pedal often, but thought this would be fun project. I thought I would just throw something together 2-3 hours in spare time. Instead, like most projects, it went slightly overboard.

This pedal organization board includes:
Caline power supply for 8 pedals.
Heavy duty outlet strip for powering amplifier, external volume/wah pedals, etc.
Patch panels for separating top level of pedals, putting them into effects send/receive loop of guitar amplifier, or putting all pedals into front of amplifier.
Rear storage for mini volume/wah pedal.
Peavy rubber amplifier feet.
Locking 1/4" patch jacks.
Pimp velvet tray/compartment linings.
Red dye + spray clear finish.
Water slide decals from inkjet printer.
I chose pedals based almost entirely on cheapest price.

I built for use with "bedroom" Marshall amplifier. Honestly, Marshall amp sounds best (to me) without any pedals at all, but it was still fun project to complete. Some of these pedals really sound really bad, but that is okay, because I sound REALLY bad attempting to "play" guitar. ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

This fifth video in series includes assembly of individual components to complete Floyd Rose tremolo. Here is helpful tip when attaching tremolo arm bushing into hardened steel base plate: take your time, and PRESS bushing into plate using vice and socket. I attempted to install Floyd Rose push-in style arm just by tightening mounting nut on bushing to force it to seat, and bushing tore in half. ๐Ÿ˜‚ (Another case of being in hurry, and not taking time to do things properly.) So, instead of push-in style arm, I used Schaller Lockmeister tremolo arm, and pressed in bushing (as you should). I prefer Schaller tremolo parts anyway, so it I was not unhappy for breaking Floyd Rose bushing. ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

Also installed in this episode are Gotoh EP-B3 gold oversized strap buttons. These are my favorite strap buttons, especially when buttons are on back of guitar where Schaller S-Locks are not well suited.

Components Used For Floyd Rose Assembly:
โ€ข Floyd Rose Original Tremolo Base Plate Black
โ€ข Floyd Rose Original Saddle Set (6) Gold
โ€ข Floyd Rose Original Bridge Mounting Studs Nickel
โ€ข Floyd Rose Titanium Insert Blocks TI (FROTISLI)
โ€ข 34mm Brass Sustain Block from eBay seller hoockey - TIP: These blocks are made in USA by hoockey; they are super nice blocks, and actually way more affordable than FR blocks. Plus, you can get them in 34mm size...unlike Floyd Rose aftermarket brass blocks. I will buy all brass blocks from hoockey in future! (For this guitar, 37mm Floyd Rose block is too big, and 32mm is too small. Factory installed Floyd Rose "Special" tremolo came with 34mm zinc block.)
โ€ข Guyker 6 Pcs String Lock Screws, 3 Pcs Locking Nut Screws and 6 Pcs Saddle Mounting Screws for FR Tremolo System - TIP: These are good value in stainless steel screws for your Floyd Rose...complete set for low price!
โ€ข 6-32 x 3/8" Flat Head Socket Cap Screws 18-8 Stainless Steel, Countersunk Head, Allen Hex Drive By Fastenere / eBay seller MonsterBolts - TIP: monsterbolts and lightningstainless are favorite sellers for all kinds of bolts/screws...huge selection of stainless and black fasteners and super fast shipping!
โ€ข Floyd Rose FR1NR3G 1000 Series / Special R3 Locking Nut (42.85mm Width) - Gold - TIP: "1000 Series/Special" R3 nut is 12" radius...to fit Mockingbird. Floyd Rose "Original" R3 nuts are 10" radius. There is much confusion on this topic on internet, but Floyd Rose data charts back up this information.
โ€ข Floyd Rose Brass Tremolo Claw - TIP: These are very thin brass/easy to deform. I like Floyd Rose "Original" spring claw better.
โ€ข Floyd Rose FRTSP Original Tremolo Springs (set of 3) - I will replace these with FRTSNRDP Heavy Duty Springs, due to use of heavy strings.

โ€ข I did not use adjustment screw tension plate, or shim plate, as Floyd Rose complete assemblies normally come with from factory. I don't think these are really necessary. Instead, brass sustain block is bolted directly to hardened steel base plate using stainless steel countersunk socket head screws with Loctite blue.

โ€ข Ground wire was attached with mounting bolt, instead of solder. To me, this is more convenient than having to solder to claw, or having to un-solder when removing claw for any reason.

โ€ข I sanded/polished top of fine tuners with micro mesh pad, to show the bare brass. No reason, other than I thought it would look cool.

โ€ข Background noise for video is produced using Squier Bass VI into Digitech Freqout into Metal Zone Waza Craft MT-2W into NUX Solid Studio Amp/Cab simulator into NUX Time Core delay into Digitech Polara Reverb into mixing console and recorded directly into camera microphone socket using Movo attenuator cable.

This clip documents complete disassembly of guitar, with exception of Floyd Rose locking nut bottom plate...which will be re-utilized. This guitar came from factory with Floyd Rose "Special" tremolo. R3 nut made for "Special" tremolo is 12" radius, matching this guitar neck. R3 for Original tremolo...and virtually all other Original and Special nut are 10" radius...according to their charts. Installation of new hardware begins, with video clip to follow. ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

Install locking tuners on new Ibanez AS73 Semi-Hollow electric guitar. GOTOH SG381-MG-T (Lock Trad) with "20" style chrome button is exact match for "factory" installed tuners. In fact, I would guess that factory installed tuner is actually made by GOTOH...OEM SG381 non-locking/un-branded tuners. This is very easy job...all required is screwdriver and 10mm socket wrench, and does not change appearance (buttons are identical)..although locking tuner does add some weight to headstock. Like many tuner installs, I use awesome stainless steel screws sold by "axegrinderz" on eBay, instead of ones that come in package. I also place some beeswax in screw holes for lubrication...like I do with most guitar modification. I also take this opportunity to check frets/neck, lower string action, polish frets (these medium size frets came VERY dull/dirty from factory), and remove protective plastic film from scratch plate and pickups. In my opinion, this guitar requires no other modifications...it is very beautiful guitar and great value right from box. Pickups sound great and all hardware is very nice. Only other thing I would possibly change in future are frets. I prefer jumbo fret over these little medium frets. But, is not a huge problem, since I can't actually play guitar. ๐Ÿ˜‚ Thanks for checking out this channel! ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

I was looking for next inexpensive candidate for modification project, and discover this "used" Mockingbird guitar for sale on website of Music Go Round in Duluth, Minnesota for 239.99USD. In advertising photos, it appeared that protective plastic film remained on pickups, cavity covers, and truss rod covers. Serial number suggest it was 2015 model, so I looked at 2015 BC Rich catalog, which lead me to believe this is 2015 model Mockingbird FR, with retail price of 249.99USD. Curiosity got best of me...I purchased and crossed fingers. I open box, and find that it is in mint condition...aside from very minor scratches in finish from normal handling. Frets look like it has never even been played...not even normal corrosion. Aside from missing tremolo arm, everything is in perfect condition...and I would almost feel bad to strip off all components and replace them...but I will do this anyway...because that is what I do. ๐Ÿ˜‚ In next episodes, I will assemble a new Floyd Rose Original tremolo from individual components (came with Floyd Rose "Special" installed...which is better than "licensed" version but still not as good as "Original" model in my opinion). I will also replace pickups with DiMarzio, most likely...something extreme in bridge position and vintage sound in neck position...just to make it interesting. New electronics will include CTS pots, Switchcraft toggle, Orange Drop cap, and Pure Tone jack (if it will fit in routing). New metal pickup rings, knobs, and maybe some Gotoh extra large strap buttons may be installed. I will also replace tuners with locking tuners. Yes, I know this is overkill with a locking tremolo, but it sure makes string changes and initial tuning a lot easier! This is a beautiful guitar, with translucent red finish...with matching finish on neck...very exciting to get start on project! ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

Sniffer Customs Website: www.sniffercustoms.com

Following bogus charge of espionage from Federal Bureau of Investigation of America, former U.S. Army counter-intelligence agent Randy Sniffer and wife Fannie established Sniffer Customs in 1984 to produce best construction of electric guitar models for sale to eager capitalists.

After successful achievement of wealth transfer from proletariat through production of goods, Sniffer Customs was sold (willfully without coercion) in 2018 to friendly investment group from Chelyabinsk. Raketavich Holdings now continues legacy of Randy and Fannie Sniffer with production of best heavy metal guitar models, and sale of additional electronic apparatus useful to rock musician in America. Contrary to any false rumor, all Sniffer Custom guitars are manufactured by patriotic Americans, and NOT in work camp using forced labor from Uzbekistan.
