Ignace Pleyel (1757-1831) was an Austrian-born composer who worked in France. At 15 he went to study with Haydn in the Esterhazy palace at Eisenstadt outside of Vienna. Later he moved to Strasbourg, France, where he was the assistant director, then later director of music at the cathedral there. As a result of the French revolution and rising anti-church sentiment, Pleyel had to find a new position in 1791 and went on a trip to London. He later returned to France, where he founded a music publishing company and a piano manufacturing company in Paris. He passed the piano company down to his son Camille, and it continued to make pianos until 2013.
