We are now entering the final phase before our historic trial begins. The stakes are high, as this legal challenge could be our best chance to end fluoridation in the United States, leading to a domino-effect around the world.
FAN urgently needs your help to ensure we can provide the funding necessary for the foremost scientific experts in the world to present the best case at trial. The primary expense at this point is the experts, who will need to spend considerable time preparing reports, preparing for their depositions, and testifying in court.
To fund these specific legal costs, FAN is currently running a Spring Lawsuit fundraiser. You can follow it on social media using the hashtag #FluorideLawsuit.
Thanks to a dedicated philanthropist, donations will be matched dollar for dollar up to $100,000! So, please consider becoming a supporter of our historic legal action by making a tax-deductible donation today that will be doubled through July 15th.

A power outage in Sandy, Utah on Feb. 6 caused dangerously high levels of fluoridation chemicals to enter the drinking water supply, which then corroded the pipes allowing high levels of copper and lead to enter the system. This made numerous residents ill, including a 3-month old baby. The local media also reported that the city failed to quickly notify the state of Utah or its residents of the dangerous contamination. The CDC recently reported that dental fluorosis, a side effect of overexposure to fluoride, has increased dramatically, now afflicting more than 60% of US teens. It isn't just teeth though. Fluoride affects many tissues in the body including the brain, bones, thyroid, and kidney. It’s 2019 - we’re removing chemicals from our water not adding them.
n this short video, FAN’s Executive Director Paul Connett discusses the importance of applying a regulatory margin of safety in an effort to protect whole populations from the harmful effects of toxic chemicals like fluoride.
The Fluoride Action Network (FAN) has created a new video vignette series to provide the public and decision-makers with a basic understanding of fluoride, to dispel myths surrounding fluoridation, and answer common questions. The series, entitled “Fluoride Fundamentals,” is launched with a short video featuring FAN’s Director Paul Connett, PhD, answering the question: “Is Fluoride a Nutrient?”
FAN responds to a new 12 year federally-funded study from the U.S. National Institutes of Health published September 19, 2017 showing fluoride exposure in utero is linked to lower IQ in children. The study can be found at this link: http://fluoridealert.org/articles/fluoride-exposure-in-utero-linked-to-lower-iq-in-kids-new-study-says/
Do your teeth, or your child’s teeth have white spots, white streaks, cloudy splotches, brown stains, or pitting? If so, you or your child may be among the millions of Americans who now have a condition called dental fluorosis.
Fluorosis is a defect of tooth enamel caused by too much fluoride intake during the first 8 years of life. Watch this new short video to learn more, and please comment below if you have fluorosis.

Current evidence strongly indicates that some people diagnosed with "arthritis" are in fact suffering from low-grade fluoride poisoning. Joint pain and stiffness are well known symptoms of excessive fluoride intake. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, too much fluoride causes "chronic joint pain" and "arthritic symptoms." (DHHS 1991). U.S. health authorities have long dismissed the relevance of this by insisting that fluoride only causes arthritic symptoms in patients with advanced forms of skeletal fluorosis, a bone disease caused by fluoride. Modern research clearly shows, however, that fluoride-induced joint pains can occur in the absence of obvious skeletal fluorosis. This makes fluoride's effects on joints extremely difficult to differentiate from common forms of arthritis. In cases where fluoride is the cause of a person's arthritic problems, reduction in daily fluoride intake for a period of several weeks or months can eliminate the symptoms in the absence of medical treatment. Correct diagnosis is thus critical to effective recovery.

One of the little known facts about this practice is that the United States, which fluoridates over 70% of its water supplies, has more people drinking fluoridated water than the rest of the world combined. Most developed nations, including all of Japan and 97% of western Europe, do not fluoridate their water.

"[T]he political profluoridation stance has evolved into a dogmatic, authoritarian, essentially antiscientific posture, one that discourages open debate of scientific issues." - Dr. Edward Groth, Senior Scientist, Consumers Union, 1991.

When people think of fluoride being prescribed for medicinal purposes, they generally think of fluoride supplementation to reduce tooth decay. Fluoride, however, has also been prescribed as a drug to reduce the activity of the thyroid gland. Up through the 1950s, doctors in Europe and South America prescribed fluoride to reduce thyroid function in patients with over-active thyroids (hyperthyroidism). (Merck Index 1968). Doctors selected fluoride as a thyroid suppressant based on findings linking fluoride to goitre, and, as predicted, fluoride therapy did reduce thyroid activity in the treated patients. (McClaren 1969; Galletti 1958; May 1937). Moreover, according to clinical research, the fluoride dose capable of reducing thyroid function was notably low -- just 2 to 5 mg per day over several months. (Galletti & Joyet 1958). This dose is well within the range (1.6 to 6.6 mg/day) of what individuals living in fluoridated communities are now estimated to receive on a regular basis. (DHHS 1991).

Unlike all other water treatment processes, fluoridation does not treat the water itself, but the person consuming it. The Food & Drug Administration accepts that fluoride is a drug, not a nutrient, when used to prevent disease. By definition, therefore, fluoridating water is a form of mass medication. This is why most western European nations have rejected the practice — because, in their view, adding a drug to everyone's water supply violates the basic medical tenet that each individual has a right to "informed consent."

John Colquhoun, BDS, PhD 1924 - 1999
A dentist and historian, John Coquhoun lived in Auckland, New Zealand while pursuing a career as a researcher, dental practitioner and public health official. He graduated from the University of Otago in New Zealand in 1948 with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery degree and received his diploma for education in Sydney. After 7 years service in the national School of Dental Service, as a teacher and administrator, he entered private practice. In 1971, he became Principal Dental Officer for the Auckland Health District. During this period he carried out research in both dentistry and Auckland social history.
Until 1980, Colquhoun was a keen advocate of water fluoridation. In that year, he was sent on a world study tour by the New Zealand Department of Health for the purpose of investigating recent research into fluoridation. Upon his return he was appointed to the post of Chairman of the Fluoridation Promotion Committee of the New Zealand Dental Health Foundation.
After returning from his study tour, Dr. Colquhoun reported the new discovery (for 1980) that dental decay was declining in "western" counties, with or without fluoridation, and that the differences between decay rates in fluoridated versus non-fluoridated locations were much less than had been claimed would occur.
Nonetheless, like many of his professional colleagues of the day, Colquhoun was very reluctant to admit that fluoridation was a failure. He advocated, and his superiors agreed to a new approach based on the belief that fluoridation still provided a marginal benefit. Colquhoun felt he was reinforced in that belief by his superiors' claim that new statistics, collected for all New Zealand School Dental Service patients (98% of the childhood population) revealed such a benefit.
He was shocked to discover, when the statistics were sent to him, that they revealed no such benefit. In fact, in most Health Districts the percentage of children who were "caries-free" was higher in the non-fluoridated areas of New Zealand.
Colquhoun disagreed sharply with his superiors' action in circulating a document, "overview of fluoridation statistics," which omitted the Health District statistical information on fluoride and "disgracefully doctored" the remaining statistics, claiming that a marginal benefit existed.
When, in addition, he discovered that dental fluorosis prevalence (a sign of fluoride toxicity) was much higher than expected in fluoridated areas, Colquhoun publicly changed his stance on fluoridation in 1983.
Dr. Colquhoun continued his research, which contributed to the earning of a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1987, and was appointed to the post-doctoral position of Honorary
Research Fellow of the University of Auckland. In 1992 he became editor of the Journal of the International Society for Fluoride Research (Fluoride), a position which provided a good overview of fluoride research in different academic disciplines.
Dr. Colquhoun passed away peacefully in his home on March 23rd, 1999 at the age of 75, remaining intellectually active almost until his final moments.
On June 29th, 2000, Dr. William Hirzy was invited to give testimony to the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, Subcommittee on Fisheries, Wildlife, and Water on behalf of the National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU) Chapter 280 - U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, National Headquarters.
At the time, Dr. Hirzy was serving his sixth term as the Senior Vice-President of the Union. His presentation that day was, "Why EPA's Union of Professionals Opposes Fluoridation." This is a video that documents the presentation along with interviews with Dr. Hirzy where he describes the reasoning behind the professional and official stance of his Union members in direct opposition to the EPA's administrative support of fluoridation.
The content of this presentation is a real eye opener. It and other papers of concern from the Union can be viewed in text form at:
