Growing up, I was an avid reader of Edgar Allen Poe. Something about the darkness on his pages beckoned and so I eagerly took his hand as he led me down the kind of dark forlorn roads a vulnerable teenager should never dare to tread. Over time the shadows lurking in the dark corners of these tomes ended up taking root in my mind. Black thoughts commandeered and held great sway over sizable swaths of my cognition and writing. It wasn’t long before this dreariness spilled into my relationships. Here is a conversation from ages past:

I have an old friend who says i'm too cynical. He says i'm a decent conversationalist, but that I waste my time on negative drivel. “The world”, he says as he sips his coffee, “has only one side according to tritorch”.

“Nonsense” I say, (it's hot coco for me), “it's just that my darker side is louder than my brighter side, and it – to your displeasure – has more to say about everything”.

“Nonsense”, he says putting down his cup, “you're just not trying. It's always easier to talk about the darker side of life, but it takes real effort and – dare i say courage – to keep things tilted toward the good. Everyone loves a scandal, and it's always the simplest thing to appeal to ones ego by giving them reason to feel good about themselves at the expense of others. The hard part is making them feel good about the world.”

The conversation went on but by the end he still hadn't convinced me, and the hour came when we had to go our separate ways. “Think about it”, he said wrestling his way into his coat, “the sun clears the shadows in the daytime, yet there is only darkness on your pages. Let the light shine through and a new world will be opened to you”.

“I'll think about it”, I said noncommittally, making no guarantees, "but the darkness intrigues me. However”, I said, slapping my old friend chummily on the back, “I will try”.

We walked out into the night and strolled along our separate paths. I, as always, walking in shadow down dark roads forlorn where old buildings loom and streetlamps flicker few and far between. My friend went his, carrying his own light along with him.

I summon this fragment of my past into this part of the story to illustrate two things:

1) That, for most, the mind is a garbage-in-garbage-out ecosystem (the importance of this will become clear in the second part of this series), and

2) That while Poe’s mind did indeed have a great influence over mine - and significantly darkened my outlook of the world - I also learned a great deal from the wisdom that was overflowing in equal measure as the gloom on those pages. To wit, one of the greatest lessons of my young life at the time, was inspired by the professional detective, C. Auguste Dupin, from the novella, ‘The Murders in the Rue Morgue’. From him I learned this:

Critical thinkers tend to act with reason and logic. Non-critical thinkers tend to react with emotion.

It was from this simple lesson in that grim murder story a handful of decades in the rear-view mirror that I learned to not allow my emotions to rule me, and this epiphany has stuck with me ever since. Decades later as my son grew older a common refrain could be heard throughout our household: “son, control your emotions, do not allow them to control you.”

Who could a guessed this morbid tome held such deep wisdom for a 15 year old
So if we are able to agree (and I think we are) that emotional mastery combined crystal-clear reason and discernment - rather than say… blinding anger and envy - are indeed valuable ideals worth working and striving for, you can be sure that in today’s backward world these virtues will be scorned while the aforementioned frailties are elevated and celebrated. Indeed, as you will discover in Part 2, this abhorrent predatory philosophy has been infecting classrooms all across America.

Final Words
Through his black tales Poe’s words poured both garbage and wisdom into my psyche. Fortunately for me, in the end, the wisdom gained shone bright enough to extinguish the acquired darkness. But what of those less fortuitous minds who are given only garbage? Without the counterbalance of enlightenment, under what rock must such a malnourished, malformed, and broken mind scurry? And where will such a dark and forlorn road lead us?
