Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi announced Cairo’s plan for a ceasefire in Libya, beginning June 8, after a tripartite meeting with the Libyan National Army’s (LNA) Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar and the Speaker of the Libyan Parliament Agila Saleh on Saturday.

Al-Sisi said that the political initiative, which he called the “Cairo initiative”, would pave the way for a return to normal life in Libya. He warned against using military tactics to resolve the crisis.

The initiative obliges all foreign parties to remove all foreign mercenaries in Libya, the dismantling of militias and a handover of weapons to allow the LNA to cooperate with other security apparatuses. This would allow Libyan actors to undertake their military duty, as well as completing the path of the 5 + 5 Joint Military Commission in Geneva.

The initiative also aims to ensure a fair representation of Libya’s three regions in forming a presidential council to be elected by the Libyan people under the supervision of the United Nations for the first time in the country’s history.

A political solution is the only way to resolve the crisis in Libya, Sisi said, adding that Libya’s security is an extension of Egypt’s security.

All Libyan parties have been asked to partake in the ceasefire, Al-Sisi said, adding that Haftar and the Parliament’s head Aguila Saleh are committed to protecting the Libyan people’s interests.

Under the guidelines of the ceasefire, all foreign fighters must withdraw from Libya, he underscored.

For his part, Field Marshal Haftar said that Turkey’s intervention in the Libyan conflict aggravated the situation in Libya and threatened regional stability.

Haftar pointed out that the whole world is witnessing Turkey’s support for “terrorism and the transfer of terrorist elements from one place to another in the Middle East and North Africa, which further complicates the solution to the Libyan crisis.”

Tripoli, June 3, 2020 – Forces backing Libya’s unity government said Wednesday they had reseized the capital’s Tripoli International Airport, held since 2019 by rival forces backing Khalifa Haftar, in the latest in a string of defeats for the eastern-based military commander. “Our forces have fully liberated Tripoli international airport,” said Mohamad Gnounou, spokesman for forces backing the Government of National Accord (GNA).
Libya’s main civilian airport, lying on the southern edge of the capital on a key highway leading into its centre, had been closed since being heavily damaged in 2014 clashes. Pro-Haftar forces, who launched an assault on the capital in April 2019, had captured the airport weeks later. But their assault ground to a bloody stalemate on the edges of the city and in recent weeks, pro-GNA forces have won back a series of key locations.
Over the past two weeks, pro-GNA forces have launched major ground and air attacks, surrounding the airport area before the final assault, Gnounou said. The operation began Wednesday morning, with drones providing air cover, Gnounou added. Pro-GNA forces were now “chasing Haftar’s militias, who are fleeing (southwards) towards Gasr Ben Gashir” some 20 kilometres (13 miles) south of the capital, he said. Pro-GNA TV channels and social media channels shared videos appearing to show loyalist forces entering the airport.
Haftar’s forces did not immediately comment on the setback, but the loss of the airport follows a string of defeats for Haftar in recent weeks. The military commander, who backs a rival administration in eastern Libya and controls much of the country’s south, last month lost the key Al-Watiya airbase from which he had launched bombing runs. Pro-GNA forces, boosted by Turkish drones and air defences, had also taken back a string of coastal towns. The fighting for Tripoli has killed hundreds and forced around 200,000 people to flee.

As nationwide protests over the murder of George Floyd enter their sixth day, US President Donald Trump said Sunday that Washington would list far-left anti-fascist political activist movement Antifa as terror group.

"The United States of America will be designating ANTIFA as a Terrorist Organization," said Trump on Twitter.

The death of the unarmed black man in police custody prompted tens of thousands of people to take to the streets of major cities from Seattle to New York demanding an end to police brutality.

His announcement came hours after Attorney General William Barr said "violent radical elements" have been hijacking peaceful protests across the country.

"The violence instigated and carried out by Antifa and other similar groups in connection with the rioting is domestic terrorism and will be treated accordingly," Barr said in a statement.

The nation's largest civil rights organization, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), slammed Trump's announcement and said there was no such legal authority for designating a domestic group as such.

"Any such designation would raise significant due process and First Amendment concerns," said the organization's National Security Project Director Hina Shamsi.

Short for "antifascist," Antifa became popular in the US following the white supremacist Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia in August 2017.

It is composed of groups, networks and individuals who believe in aggressive opposition to far right-wing movements.

Floyd, 46, died after Derek Chauvin, a former white police officer, knelt on his neck and cut air passage for nearly nine minutes. His last were "I can't breathe," which became the slogan of the nationwide protests.

Floyd's death has strong parallels to that of Eric Garner, who died during a fatal 2014 arrest in New York, also repeatedly pleading with officers, "I can't breathe."

The phrase became a rallying point for protesters demonstrating against the killings of unarmed black ..

Tripoli—Libyan government forces pounded positions of warlord Khalifa Haftar's militias at Tripoli airport, south of the Libyan capital, according to the military on Sunday. Three armored vehicles belonging to Haftar were destroyed in the artillery attacks, the government-led Operation Volcano of Rage said in a statement. Meanwhile, military spokesman Mohammed Gununu called on members of Haftar's militias to lay down arms, pledging a fair trial for those who surrender. The call came one day after government forces said they were advancing in several areas near Tripoli airport.
The internationally recognized Libyan government has been under attack by Haftar’s forces since April 2019. The government launched Operation Peace Storm on March 26 to counter attacks on the capital. While France, Egypt, Russia, and UAE support Haftar, directly or indirectly, Turkey has shown solidarity with the UN-recognized, legitimate government representing the will of the Libyan people. Following the ouster of late ruler Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya's new government was founded in 2015 under a UN-led political agreement.

Haftar’s illegal forces in eastern Libya have launched numerous attacks to capture Tripoli, the nation’s capital.

Protesters defied the prefecture's ban on demonstrations to rally against the French government's coronavirus restrictions. After giving order to disperse, police utilised tear gas to clear a group of protesters at the town's Blue Ribbon shopping centre.
When announcing France's nation-wide lockdown in March, President Emmanuel Macron said the decisions were taken "on the basis of scientific recommendations with only one objective: to protect us in the face of the virus' spread."
According to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University, since the beginning of the outbreak France has registered 182,018 cases of the coronavirus and 28,218 deaths related to the virus thus far.

A lot of people are going to die until we solve the political situation,' says health expert—With cases rising rapidly, a military general with no medical experience leading the Ministry of Health, and a president admitting there's no proof his preferred treatment will work, Brazil has become one of the countries hardest hit by the coronavirus.

As health systems, from Sao Paulo to the Amazon, strain under the growing number of cases, policy experts say there's little hope that the country can change course when the president is one of their biggest obstacles.

"It's unbelievable what's happening in Brazil. When the biggest science denier in the country is the president himself, what can we scientists do?" said Natalia Pasternak, a microbiologist and researcher at the Institute of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Sao Paulo.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been among the world leaders most dismissive of the coronavirus, initially downplaying it as a "little flu," then later responding "so what" when asked about the country's rising death toll.

His own Ministry of Health had opposed him, promoting physical distancing and quarantines, but Bolsonaro fired popular Health Minister Luiz Henrique Mandetta in April, and then forced his replacement Nelson Teich to resign last week. Both were trained doctors.

"I don't see any hope in the short term," Pasternak said. "I think the numbers are going to keep piling up and a lot of people are going to die until we solve the political situation."

KARACHI, Pakistan — The bodies were pulled one by one from the ruins of damaged buildings and the smoldering wreckage of the Pakistan International Airlines plane that had crashed a day earlier into a crowded neighborhood of Karachi: 97 of them by Saturday.
Many were charred beyond recognition, leaving families — some clutching pictures of their loved ones — to depend on DNA results from a laboratory to identify those they had lost. Most of the relatives had spent the night before at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center, the city’s largest government hospital, and on Saturday in hot weather at the crash site in the Model Colony neighborhood, waiting for the grim word.
To help with the identifications, DNA samples from relatives of 40 victims had been submitted at the forensic lab at the University of Karachi, officials said. Nineteen bodies were identified and handed over to the relatives after DNA tests and identification, according to health officials. And post-mortems were being carried out on the rest of the passengers of the plane, an Airbus A320 belonging to the national airline.

Police deployed water cannons and made a number of arrests after advising the unauthorised counter protesters to disperse. The Antifa protesters can be seen marching close to each other, despite social distancing recommendations, while holding banners calling anti-lockdown protesters conspiracy theorists and right wing extremists.
On the officially registered anti-lockdown protest, people were standing on marked sites respecting the two-meter (6.5 feet) safety distance and calling for the basic rights to be respect and maintained by the state.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel explained that the measures were necessary in order "to win time in the fight against the virus."
Over the past few weeks, Germany has been gradually lifting its coronavirus-related restrictions with the reopening of stores, museums, some schools and other non-essential business. Anti-lockdown protesters demand more freedom of choice in whether to comply with the coronavirus safety measures or not.
According to the latest data published by the Johns Hopkins University, Germany reported 179,787 coronavirus infection cases and 8,256 deaths with the disease.

Anti-government protests on the streets they keep leaving incidents. The National Police have arrested at least one person and identified several this Friday on Ferraz Street, in front of the PSOE headquarters, during the protest with saucepans against the Government. This has been confirmed to Efe by police sources, who have specified that the arrested is the spokeswoman for the neo-Nazi group Hogar Social Madrid, Melisa Domínguez, which is accused of resistance and disobedience when confronting the agents deployed in the area, in which hundreds of citizens have protested at nine o’clock at night for the management of the Executive in the coronavirus crisis.

The arrest of Melisa Domínguez has taken place when National Police agents have urged the members of this ultra collective to remove some posters that they carried during the protest in which it was possible to read ‘900,000 people without charging an ERTE’. “Several protesters have been identified and fined, and one of them arrested for protesting the police abuse”, has indicated Hogar Social Madrid on his Twitter account.

Dozens of people have gathered again this Friday in front of the PSOE headquarters to protest the management of the Pedro Sánchez government in the coronavirus pandemic. For the seventh consecutive day, the congregants, in fewer numbers than previous days and in the presence of a strong police device, have carried out a “pan” and have issued shouts of resignation against the Executive.

At around 9:00 p.m., a group of citizens has demonstrated again, but, as has happened in recent days, the police presence has prevented the congregants from invading the road and cutting off that section of the road to car traffic. In this way, concentrations of people have been avoided, limiting the movement of citizens to the sidewalks.

China is set to impose new national security legislation on Hong Kong, provoking fears of further protests as it recovers from the coronavirus pandemic. The measures will allow for widespread crackdowns on anti-government sentiment and are expected to ramp up hostility between Beijing and pro-democracy protesters in the former British colony. The National People’s Congress, which will begin in Beijing on Friday, is expected to circumvent the Hong Kong government by establishing national security laws that would ban sedition, secession and treason. Under the "one country, two systems" policy, Hong Kong has been unable to pass its own national security legislation. China has so far resisted imposing its own regulations.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu backed an immediate ceasefire in Libya during a phone call on Thursday, Russia's Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The two diplomats also supported the resumption of the United Nations political process in the North African country, the statement said.
They spoke a day after the Libyan National Army of eastern military commander Khalifa Haftar said it had pulled back from some Tripoli frontlines, calling into question its ability to sustain a year-long offensive aimed at seizing the capital.
