Let's delve into the development hell of Alan Wake—the ambitious original IP that Remedy Entertainment developed hot off the success of Max Payne 1 & 2. Its fascinating concept and groundbreaking technology were inspiring. But as the years went on, the game evolved into a fairly rudimentary 3rd-person shooter with an interesting premise.

In this video, we explore the announcements, development and shift in design for the game. I'll also be sharing my own thoughts on how the game failed to live up to its massive potential. Included are references to other works for some perspective, like Silent Hill, In the Mouth of Madness and even Mike Flanagan's horror series. I hope you find my break-up letter to a series and developer I've known and loved for years, enjoyable, or at least compelling.

What do Grand Theft Auto, Ferraris, designer stubble, outrun, synthwave, retrowave, and the ‘80s renaissance have in common? Two words: Miami Vice. This stylish police procedural spread its vast influence echoes across our culture, entertainment and civilization for four decades, including the many shows, movies and games it inspired over the years, such as Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Hotline Miami, Drive (2011), Burn Notice, and countless other works.

And while most only know it for white suits and funny haircuts, the show is much more than it initially lets on. And unlike most TV series, this work of fiction helped transform the Miami-Dade area from a crime-addled slum to a booming party town, famous for its music and tourism scene.

Let’s delve into the cultural, societal and media influence of 1984’s Miami Vice.

An extensive retrospective analysis of 20 years of Fallout from a dedicated fan since the very first game. From the humble beginnings of Interplay's Fallout, to the Black Isle Studio masterpiece Fallout 2, the spinoffs and failures in-between (Fallout Tactics, Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel and the 'Van Buren' project), its long-awaited Bethesda-developed reboot: Fallout 3, the revered sidestep Fallout: New Vegas by Obsidian Entertainment, and finally to the latest entry Fallout 4 and what the future may hold for the Fallout franchise.

Join me on this adventure to find out where the series got it right, where it missteped, and why I believe that despite technological improvements and innovations over the years, the series has taken a turn for the worse both in atmosphere and setting, and its focus on simplification over player choice, agency and freedom.

And hopefully you'll agree with me on my treatise that Fallout isn't Fallout.

1:36 - The Inspirations of Fallout (Wizardry, Ultima, Wasteland)
2:41 - A Post-Nuclear Role-Playing Game (Fallout)
7:52 - If It Ain't Broke (Fallout 2, Fallout Tactics, Fallout: The Brotherhood of Steel, Van Buren)
12:08 - Fallout, Mutated (Fallout 3)
18:52 - A Second Chance (Fallout: New Vegas)
23:52 - The Radioactive Decay of a Franchise (Fallout 4)
28:59 - The Future of Fallout
