Sam Bankman-Fried, the creator and owner of both Alameda and FTX, is accused of multiple counts of fraud in connection to FTX, his crypto company. Bankman-Fried, who has plead not guilty, is accused of directly stealing money from customers to pay for various personal things, family members, and funneling money directly into his other company, Alameda. On the day of the trial starting, the X user @Zowae uploaded a video showcasing some of the background to the trial.

The video was made private or deleted by the original uploader, evident in a quote of the original video by Facebook by user Amber Brendle Williard on October 7th. Facebook user Amber Brendle Williard then reposted the full video on the morning of October 8th. In the same hour, Facebook user Nikki Reed also reposted the video.

The Minecraft mob vote is an annual event hosted by Mojang, the company behind Minecraft, where participants are asked to vote on one of three potential mobs to add to Minecraft. The losing mobs are not added to the game. In 2023, the potential mobs are the crab, penguin or armadillo.

On October 6th, 2023, Redditor u/Oceans24mission posted a graphic to /r/Minecraft showcasing all the mobs lost to the mob votes, garnering over 5,300 upvotes in three days.

Kevin McCarthy's time as House Speaker has been fraught since his election in January 2023. During the House Speaker election, McCarthy had difficulty securing enough votes from hard-right Republicans in Congress, who voiced that they viewed McCarthy as too willing to work with Democrats, particularly when it came to passing spending bills. This resulted in 14 rounds of House Speaker elections without McCarthy winning a majority. He won on the 15th after making some concessions to right-wing members of the Republican party, including a concession that allowed one congressperson the power to bring forth a motion to vacate the Speaker.
