I discuss two short poems from George Eliot and discuss her evolving religious convictions:

Felix Holt, the hero of George Eliot's 5th novel, comes to life and writes an essay for Blackwood's Magazine to explain the new burdens and responsibilities for England's working men who have just been enfranchised. All similarities to current political events are purely coincidental.

Felix Holt's address to working men was published in Blackwood's Magazine (January, 1868) : https://georgeeliotarchive.org/files/original/cdeafd28c34727fcfbc66595ed3247df.pdf

I discuss George Eliot's 5th novel, Felix Holt : The Radical, published in 1866 by John Blackwood. Although Felix Holt is one of her least read novels, it has thus far become one of my favorites. Thank you for watching.

Another video in my series on George Eliot‘s life in literature. I am 11 videos and I am finally on George Eliot‘s very first full length novel Adam Bede, published in 1859. At this point in her career, George Eliot excels in character development and the cinematic description of the environment that she is describing. But she still cannot create strong female love interest and she has no idea how to enter her stories. So far George Elliot is 4 for 4 in having a weak female lead who dies by the end of the story. But it is still early in her career and though she shows potential I am hoping that her novels improve over time.

For those of you familiar with the band Jethro Tull, I am convinced that the Jethro Tull song Velvet Green is based on the novel Adam Bede. Here is a link to a 1977 performance of that song. Check out the lyrics and tell me I am wrong..!!
