The Swabian-Alemannic Fastnacht is an ancient tradition mostly present in Germany. Similar traditions can be seen in Switzerland, Italy, Norway and even in Tibet. The term Fastnacht or Fasnet derives loosely from Indo-European base "pwo" meaning to purify and middle high German "vaselen" meaning to prosper. The term "fasten" is like the English "fasting" and it is related to the fasting season at Jule or Christmas. The Fasnet events are traditionally organized by the guilds.
