Ah, synthwave. Just hearing that word instantly transports me back to a time of neon lights, arcade machines, and wild aspirations of a tech-fueled future. Did you ever get the feeling that maybe you were born in the wrong era? Every time I hear a synthwave track, I’m filled with a nostalgia for an era I never truly experienced, but somehow deeply long for. And, you know, Oldschool Johnny used to say the same thing. He'd always tell me, "Man, the '80s was where it's at!"

Synthwave, often also termed as retrowave or outrun, is more than just music. It's a subculture, an aesthetic, a feeling. Stemming from inspirations in the 1980s, it’s a blend of the decade's pop culture, the birth of electronic music, and the burgeoning computer revolution. The synthesis of all these influences gives synthwave its distinct sound—a mishmash of futuristic synths, nostalgic rhythms, and an unmistakable '80s vibe.

So, why the '80s? What’s the magic behind that decade? The 1980s was a revolutionary time. Technological advancements were taking giant leaps. Video games made their mark, personal computers started appearing in households, and electronic music was becoming mainstream. Movies like Blade Runner and Tron painted pictures of futuristic landscapes complemented by synthesizer-heavy soundtracks. Meanwhile, series like Miami Vice showcased flashy neon aesthetics, fast cars, and pastel suits.

Retrowave nostalgia takes these elements and amplifies them. It's about celebrating and reliving the imagined atmosphere of that decade—a fusion of both its realities and the fictional worlds of its pop culture. The feeling is encapsulated in the synthwave music we hear, the visuals of sunsets over digital horizons, and the fantasies of driving down neon-lit streets in supercars.

Now, while the ‘80s were the origin, the real rise of synthwave as a genre happened in the 2000s. Artists began to experiment by recreating '80s sounds with modern equipment. The tracks were characterized by power..

Hey fellow music enthusiasts! Let's dive into the infectious beats, pulsating rhythms, and electrifying vibes that make us all want to hit the dance floor and, in the immortal words of the late Nate Dogg, "Shake That Ass." In the realm of electronic dance music (EDM) and house music, the call to dance, move, and let loose has been a constant, creating an undeniable connection between the beats and our bodies.

To truly understand the phenomenon of shaking that ass in popular dance music, we must first explore the roots of EDM and house music. Emerging from the underground scenes of Chicago and Detroit in the late 20th century, these genres have evolved into global phenomena, captivating audiences with their mesmerizing soundscapes and infectious energy.

At the heart of EDM and house music is the beat—a pulsating, heart-thumping force that serves as the backbone of every track. This beat is carefully crafted to get bodies moving, creating an undeniable urge to respond with rhythmic and spontaneous dance. The groove becomes the language, and our bodies become the storytellers as we surrender to the music's magnetic pull.

In the realm of EDM, sub-genres like techno, trance, and drum and bass have their own unique ways of inviting us to shake that ass. Techno, characterized by its repetitive beats and hypnotic melodies, creates a trance-like state that allows dancers to lose themselves in the rhythm. Trance, on the other hand, often features euphoric builds and drops, elevating the dance experience to a spiritual level. Drum and bass, with its rapid-fire beats, challenges dancers to keep up with the breakneck pace, creating an exhilarating and adrenaline-fueled dance floor.

Now, let's shift our focus to the heart and soul of house music. Rooted in the spirit of inclusivity and acceptance, house music is all about unity on the dance floor. The four-on-the-floor beat, characterized by a kick drum hitting on each quarter note, lays the foundation for a groove that is ..

Electronic Dance Music (EDM) has witnessed a transformative evolution over the years, with countless subgenres and innovative techniques captivating audiences worldwide. Among the many factors that contribute to the EDM culture's vibrancy, one concept stands out: "Lick It." This infectious phrase has become a dance motivator, igniting the dance floors, and inciting fervent enthusiasm among EDM enthusiasts. At the heart of this phenomenon is the legendary producer known as Oldschool Johnny, who has played a pivotal role in crafting this catchy and electrifying dance anthem.
"Lick It" is more than just a phrase; it's a sensation that sweeps through the EDM community, inspiring club-goers and festival attendees to let loose and dance with reckless abandon. This phrase, often chanted by fans during live performances, has a unique power to unite people, transcending language barriers and cultural differences. But how did "Lick It" become such a potent dance motivator, and who is Oldschool Johnny?

Oldschool Johnny: The EDM Pioneer

Oldschool Johnny, whose real name is Johnathan Monroe, is a revered figure in the EDM world. He's a seasoned producer and DJ who rose to prominence during the genre's early days in the 1990s. His contributions to the development of EDM are immeasurable, with a signature sound that fuses elements of techno, house, and trance.
Monroe's journey began in the underground club scene, where he honed his skills and developed an uncanny ability to read the energy of a crowd. His commitment to the craft and a relentless pursuit of innovation led him to produce a track that would ultimately change the course of EDM history.
Creating "Lick It"
In 2020, Oldschool Johnny entered the studio with a vision to create a track that would encapsulate the raw energy and unadulterated joy of dance music. Drawing inspiration from the vibrant rave culture of the time, he meticulously crafted "Lick It." The track was a dynamic blend of pulsating beats, catchy vocal s..

The theme of connection in house music is not just metaphorical but literal. The genre's very name – "house" – speaks to a sense of home, belonging, and being with one's chosen family. Tracks often sample pieces of other songs, connecting past and present, different genres and artists, in a continuous dialogue that honors the roots while innovating for the future. These samples and hooks act as familiar touchstones, coupling the listeners with collective memories and shared experiences.

House music's coupling extends to its ability to bring together disparate elements – acoustic and electronic, vocal and instrumental, the deep and the uplifting. It’s not uncommon for a house track to incorporate classical piano riffs with synthesized baselines, or soulful gospel vocals with electronic hi-hats and snares. This synergy creates an inclusive soundscape where contrast is celebrated and harmonized.

The culture of house music emphasizes unity, often vocalized in the lyrics with calls for togetherness and love. The repetition of these messages becomes a mantra for the community, a reminder of the power of collective experience in the face of societal division. DJs and producers, the orchestrators of this connection, craft their sets to take their audiences on a journey, coupling highs and lows, energy and relaxation, thus reflecting the dynamics of human connection.

Moreover, house music often serves as a backdrop for physical connection. The act of dancing itself is a form of coupling, with individuals moving in harmony with others, often in sync with a stranger who shares nothing but the beat and the moment. The dance floor becomes a microcosm of society, where barriers are broken down and people connect regardless of background, belief, or identity.

The connection fostered by house music also extends to its global reach. What began as an underground movement in Chicago has coupled with various cultures around the world, influencing and being influenced by local sou..

Body positivity within the fitness community is a powerful and transformative concept that's reshaping how we approach physical health and mental wellbeing. As a fitness enthusiast who's been through the ups and downs of body image issues, I can't stress enough the importance of embracing this movement. So, let's dive in and explore the myriad of positive aspects it brings to our lives.

First off, body positivity is all about loving and accepting your body, irrespective of its shape, size, or appearance. In the fitness world, this translates to a shift from the traditional emphasis on aesthetics to a more holistic view of health and wellness. It's a refreshing change that celebrates diversity and encourages people to focus on what their bodies can do, rather than solely how they look.

Mental Health Benefits: Beyond the Physical

The impact of body positivity on mental health cannot be understated. When the fitness community embraces all body types, it creates a nurturing and supportive environment. This inclusivity reduces the stigma and pressure often associated with gym culture, making fitness more accessible and enjoyable for everyone. The result? A significant boost in self-esteem and a reduction in negative self-talk and body shaming.

Encouraging Sustainable Fitness Habits

Body positivity promotes a healthier, more sustainable approach to fitness. It encourages individuals to engage in physical activities that they enjoy, rather than punishing workouts solely aimed at altering physical appearance. This shift leads to a more balanced relationship with exercise, where the focus is on feeling good, rather than looking a certain way. Consequently, people are more likely to stick with their fitness routines long-term, leading to lasting health benefits.

The Ripple Effect on Physical Health

When you're working out because you love your body, not because you hate it, the physical benefits are profound. A body-positive approach often leads to better nutritional..

As a die-hard fan of house music, I've always been fascinated by the genre's unique ability to celebrate and flaunt sexuality. House music, born in the vibrant clubs of Chicago and New York in the early 1980s, has always been more than just a genre; it's a cultural movement, a form of expression, a way of life. It's the heartbeat of the night, the pulse that drives us to be our most authentic selves. And central to this authenticity is the unapologetic flaunting of sexuality.

The roots of house music are steeped in the underground LGBT+ communities. Clubs like The Warehouse in Chicago and Paradise Garage in New York were safe havens, where marginalized individuals found solace and freedom. House music became the soundtrack of liberation, a rebellious response to the mainstream. It was here, amidst the thumping basslines and hypnotic rhythms, that flaunting one's sexuality wasn't just accepted, it was celebrated.

Think about the classic tracks that define the genre. Tracks like "I Feel Love" by Donna Summer or Frankie Knuckles' remixes. These songs are odes to the liberating power of sexual expression. The pulsating beats, the soulful vocals, they speak of desire, passion, and freedom. In the world of house music, sexuality isn't just a theme; it's a vibrant, pulsing energy that fuels the dance floor.

As a fan, I've seen firsthand how house music creates an environment where people feel empowered to express their sexuality. It's not just in the lyrics or the seductive beats; it's in the atmosphere of the clubs, the energy of the crowd, the spirit of the DJs. There's a sense of unity, an understanding that we're all here to celebrate who we are, in all our diverse expressions of sexuality.

Moreover, house music has always pushed boundaries, not just musically but socially and culturally. It's a genre that has consistently challenged norms and stereotypes about sexuality. In a house music club, traditional roles and expectations dissolve. Here, you're free to be ..

You know, there's something magical about house music, an unspoken language that transcends just beats and rhythms. It's a narrative, a journey of emotions, capturing the essence of happy endings, not just in music, but in love too. As a die-hard fan of house music, let me take you on this odyssey of euphoria and connection.

House music, at its core, is an embodiment of joy and a celebration of life. Its roots are deeply entrenched in the need for unity, a response to social and political upheavals, offering a sanctuary where all are welcome. This inclusivity is mirrored in love's universal language. Just like house music breaks barriers, love transcends differences, uniting hearts in a shared rhythm.

The beat of house music is like the heartbeat of a love story. It starts slow, building up with anticipation, much like the budding stages of romance. The gradual crescendo mirrors the journey of falling in love - exhilarating, unpredictable, and deeply moving. The drops in house tracks? They're like those moments of revelation in love, where everything just falls into place, and you feel a sense of completeness.

House music often incorporates soulful vocals, conveying stories of love, loss, and redemption. These lyrics resonate because they reflect our own experiences in love – the highs, the lows, and everything in between. The euphoric melodies paired with poignant lyrics often lead to an introspective journey, much like the introspection one experiences in a relationship.

A key element in house music is its repetitive, hypnotic beats, creating a sense of continuity and timelessness. This repetition is akin to the enduring nature of true love. It's a constant, a rhythm that continues despite life's changing scenarios, just like a steadfast love that endures through thick and thin.

The communal experience of house music, often shared in clubs or festivals, is a testament to the collective joy it brings, much like the shared happiness in a fulfilling relationsh..

Hey there, so, like, I wanna talk about what it's really like living with ADHD as a music producer, you know? It's this constant rollercoaster of creativity and chaos that I just can't ignore.

So, the first thing you gotta get is the whole distraction thing. Man, it's like my brain is always on shuffle mode, and I can't find the right track to focus on. When I'm in the studio, even the tiniest things, like a car passing by or my buzzing phone, can totally derail me. It's like I'm fighting this never-ending battle just to stay on course, and it's super draining.

And then there's this whole time management and organization mess. Music production, you know, it's not just about jamming out on instruments. It's this intricate puzzle with a million pieces. For me, it's like trying to put together a thousand-piece jigsaw puzzle without the picture on the box. Deadlines and schedules? They're more like suggestions because my concept of time is, well, fluid, to say the least. I start a bunch of projects at once, and most of them end up as unfinished symphonies.

But hey, here's the crazy part – I've got this superpower called hyperfocus. It's like a double-edged sword, man. When it hits, it's like I'm in this tunnel, and nothing else matters. Hours fly by, and I'm in this creative zone, coming up with sounds and melodies that blow my mind. It's where the magic happens, but it's also where I can lose track of everything else. I'll obsess over tiny details, like getting the perfect snare drum sound, and totally miss the big picture.

Now, some of us with ADHD turn to medication to help us out. It's like putting on glasses for someone with blurry vision. It helps me focus and control impulses, but it's not all roses. Sometimes, it feels like it tames my wild, creative side. It's this constant tug-of-war between managing my ADHD and staying true to my artistic self. Like, can I find a balance between being me and being in control?

But, you know, it's not all doom and gloom...

The feelings right, my heart is pumpin'
Sweat is drippin', our hearts beat groove (oh-yeah)
Eyes keep lockin', across the floor yea
A seductive pull, I can't ignore (oh-oh)
You move so nice, my heart is pumpin'
Your body's tight, our heart beats groove
Eyes keep lockin', across the floor yea
A seductive move, I can't ignore (oh-oh)
Lost in the rhythm, we're feelin' the heat (feel the heat)
Electric connection, our hearts skip a beat (oh-oh)
On this dancefloor, we're igniting the flame (ooh-ooh)
Sensual seduction, we're playin' the game (playin' the game)
Dancefloor lovers, fallin' in love (fallin' in love)
Tonight we're gonna catchin' fire above (ooh-yeah)
You move so nice, my heart is pumpin'
Your body's tight, our heart beats groove
Eyes keep lockin', across the floor yea
A seductive move, I can't ignore (oh-oh)

Oldschool Johnny (2023)

House music is more than just a genre; it's a way of life, a culture, and a movement that revolves around one powerful theme: togetherness. As a devoted house music fan, I can attest that there's something profoundly magical about the way this genre brings people together, transcending barriers and uniting us on the dance floor. In a world where divisions often prevail, house music stands as a beacon of unity, connecting souls through its pulsating rhythms and soulful melodies.

The roots of house music can be traced back to the vibrant city of Chicago in the early 1980s. It emerged as a response to the prevailing socio-economic challenges and racial tensions of the time. It was in these tumultuous circumstances that DJs and producers began experimenting with disco, funk, and electronic elements to create a sound that would ultimately become known as house music. This new genre was a musical embrace, an invitation to everyone to come together and celebrate life.

One of the most iconic features of house music is its unifying beats. The four-on-the-floor rhythm, characterized by a steady kick drum on each beat, serves as a universal language that transcends cultural and linguistic barriers. When you step onto the dance floor of a house music event, you become part of a collective heartbeat, a rhythmic pulse that syncs with the hearts of others around you. It's a sensation that can only be truly understood and appreciated by those who have experienced it firsthand.

The dance floor is where the magic happens. It's a space where people from all walks of life come together, leaving behind their differences and prejudices. In this haven of unity, it doesn't matter who you are or where you come from; what matters is the music and the shared experience. As the bassline reverberates through your body and the melodies carry you away, you can't help but feel a sense of belonging, a connection to everyone around you. It's as if the music itself is weaving an invisible th..

House music, with its pulsating beats and euphoric rhythms, encapsulates more than just a genre of music; it embodies a unique cultural movement that intertwines the themes of love and joy, culminating in what we often celebrate as happy endings. To a true house music enthusiast like me, this genre is not just a collection of sounds but a narrative of emotional journeys, where the ecstasy of love and the soulful vibes of dance music merge into one harmonious experience.

The essence of house music lies in its ability to evoke strong emotions. It's like a rollercoaster of feelings, starting with anticipation, building up with excitement, and finally releasing into a state of blissful contentment. This emotional ride mirrors the dynamics of love. Just like in a love story, where two individuals go through ups and downs, face challenges, and eventually find harmony, house tracks often follow a similar pattern. They start with a gentle intro, build up with layers of beats and melodies, and climax in a burst of joy and energy, symbolizing the happy ending we all yearn for in our love stories.

What makes house music exceptionally connected to the theme of love is its roots. Originating in the 1980s in Chicago, house music was more than a genre; it was a movement that brought together people of different backgrounds, races, and sexual orientations. It was a sonic embodiment of unity and acceptance. The dance floor became a melting pot where everyone could express themselves freely and experience a sense of belonging. This inclusivity is akin to the universal language of love, which knows no boundaries and brings people together.

The lyrics in many house tracks also play a pivotal role in weaving the theme of love into the music. These lyrics often speak of love, relationships, joy, and sometimes even heartbreak, but always with an underlying message of hope and happiness. It's this optimistic outlook that gives house music its uplifting quality. Even when a song narrat..

Feel the beat, it's takin' over
Moving closer, can't explain
In the night, we ignite the fire
Burning higher, in this game (oh-oh-oh)
Your whisper, it electrifies me (electrifies me)
I feel your touch, it's like ecstasy (like ecstasy)
No need for words, the connection's strong (connection's strong)
Just you and me, all night long (all night long)
Baby, I can't resist
The way you make me feel like this (feel like this)
Under the stars, we're in bliss (we're in bliss)
With your touch, I can't resist
No need for instruments, just you and me
In this feeling, sensual mellow
[Verse] Feel the pressure, growing stronger
Feel my body, touch my soul
On the dance floor, we're making love, yea,
I mean dancing, don't you know?
Move on closer, you can touch me
Your burning body, really turns me on
When I see your face, filled with desire
I really wanna love you, all night long,
Baby, I can't resist
The way you make me feel like this (feel like this)
Under the stars, we're in bliss (we're in bliss)
With your touch, I can't resist
No need for instruments, just you and me, yeah

My name is john Green, Ireland based Dub specialist. I used to be a collector of stomp boxes and other retro music equipment. I owned reel to reel tape recorders, effects pedals, Roland sequencers & MPC samplers. But when we moved to Ireland, I sold all my outboard sound gear. I'm now a recording minimalist. I record digital music 100% in the box, though sometimes I use vocals that someone has sent me: [email protected] I have worked around the world, mostly doing collabs.
This year I'm moving towards hip hop, lofi type beats and upbeat synth pop as the genres are very exciting. So far, I've released plenty of instrumental reggae music, and hope to make more connections in Ireland to perform this music live.
I post found footage videos with my music, dub, reggae hip hop & lofi. Buy the FULL ALBUM right here: http://itunes.apple.com/album/id/1575340933
