Mycobacterium Avium Paratuberculosis (MAP) is a bacteria in the Mycobacteriaceae family. The Mycobacteriaceae family includes the pathogenic bacteria that cause Tuberculosis and leprosy.

MAP was first isolated and described as the etiological agent of a chronic inflammatory enteric disease in cattle by Heinrich Albert Johne, a German veterinarian, in 1895 MAP infection in humans probably begins via the fecal oral route following consumption of contaminated milk, food or water.
