In this video I describe how to make note-taking a more active process and what factors to consider before taking notes. For a text, this means thinking about your goals, the level of detail needed, and the density of the material in order to determine how often you should stop to write notes. For lecture, it's also important to consider what backups you'll have available in order to reduce the burden of taking notes while also listening to the lecturer.

In this video I discuss the relationship between culture and mental illness and how culture may influence the prevalence, expression, or understanding of psychological disorders. While the DSM-IV described "culture-bound syndromes" such as koro (penile retraction syndrome), the DSM-5 has replaced this with description of cultural syndromes, cultural idioms of distress, and cultural explanations of distress or perceived causes. Next I discuss several cultural syndromes (dhat or semen-loss anxiety, ataque de nervios, and shenjing shuairuo) and whether these might be manifestations of underlying disorders like depression or anxiety. Lastly I consider the implications of how we think about the cultural divisions between disorders when it comes to treatment focused on more universal approaches (such as prescription of antidepressant medication) rather than culturally-specific treatments.

In this video I discuss David Rosenhan's well-known study in which pseudo-patients went for psychiatric consultations and described a single symptom of hearing voices. I discuss how this study raised questions about recognition and diagnosis of mental illness, interpretations of personal history or behavior as pathological, and the possible effects of labeling for people diagnosed with a psychological disorder.

In this video I describe characteristics that are important for determining whether traits or behaviors represent potential symptoms of a disorder. These mostly focus on deviance, dysfunction, and distress, though danger and duration also play a role in identifying symptoms. Next I discuss the challenges of diagnosis and the need to find a balance between objectivity and the inherently subjective nature of the psychiatrist-client relationship.

Psych Exam Review provides answers to common questions and explanations of the key concepts in psychology. The goal for this channel is to provide the best approximation of one-on-one tutoring possible while still being freely available for all students or anyone who is interested in psychology.

These videos cover the content of an introductory psychology class and can help students enrolled in a college course, in AP Psychology, or in IB Psychology. I explain concepts as if I were tutoring a student, writing down all the important terms (in my admittedly terrible handwriting) and explaining why these terms matter for understanding psychology.

About Me (Michael Corayer): I earned my Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Harvard in 2006 and I've taught AP Psychology and IB Psychology at an international school in Shanghai since 2008. I'm the author of Master Introductory Psychology, a guide that helps students understand the most important concepts in psychology.
