Join Shell "Presto" DiBaggio in a Sketch

'n' Chat, where I discuss how to tell if a

drawing or painting is finished. I'll give

you the three questions I ask myself to

determine whether a drawing is polished

enough to call it done. I'll also talk a

bit about drawing mythological creatures.

While talking, I will be showing part of

my drawing process for a book illustration

of a griffon surprising a young woman.

The griffon is Peck and the woman is

Chemistra, by the way. They appear in our

in my and my husband's Ascension Epoch

books.

Like many of Shell Presto's drawings, this

Join Shell "Presto" DiBaggio in a Sketch 'n' Chat, where I discuss the pros and cons of drawing fanart, from finding an audience, to the infamous, "Is it legal to sell fanart?" Hopefully it will help you decide whether you want to draw fanart or original art, especially if you want to sell prints at comic book or anime conventions.

While talking, I will be showing part of my painting process on Jango Fett from Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, as well as drawing the Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz as part of the Inktober/Drawlloween prompt "Lights, Camera, Axes."

Join Shell Presto in a Sketch 'n' Chat, where I discuss how to tell if your art is at a beginner or professional level or somewhere in between. I'll tell you how I identify what I need to work on to improve my own art, and how you can do the same to improve your own. I'll talk about the difference between liking an artist's work and actually wanting to draw like them, and setting your own goals. I also offer advice on how to approach other artists to get the most helpful and honest constructive criticism from them.

While we talk about that, I'll working on two drawings. First, a realistic watercolor portrait piece of a man, and then an inked illustration of a sci fi cyborg. Both are characters who will appear in future Ascension Epoch books.

Join Shell Presto DiBaggio as I take on the cheap art supply challenge using a 68-piece kid's art kit I bought from Michael's for $3. These are the worst color pencils and markers I've ever used, and we're gonna give it the old college try and make some darn good art with them! Right?

I'll also talk about how important contrast is in a drawing, why mixed media is the way to go when you've got limited funding, and what the real best buy to make fabulous art on the cheap is. Plus, I'll talk about my process with this piece, such as the concessions I had to make with the color choices I had.

This video is part 2 (of 2). If you missed part 1 where I began the story and drew Meteora, please go here:
https://www.bitchute.com/video/cetruGtEMafX/

This is a Copic marker speedpaint, but we're also regaling you with a special, two-part Ascension Epoch Christmas story. Both parts create a standalone story, and you don't need to know the characters or the Ascension Epoch to enjoy it.

There's life outside of spandex and explosions for the Challenger Foundation, and this story focuses on a quiet Christmas Eve moment between two of its members, Meteora and the Atomic Ranger.

It's lighter on the sci fi and action than our usual books, but Ascension Epoch fans will be happy to know we've got just as much character building in this romance as we do in our novels and short stories.

Shell Presto talks about her Inktober 2018 experience. She reveals how many Inktober drawings she managed to do, often using Drawlloween prompts.

Halloween Art includes selkies, vampires, daft punk pumpkins, doctor mindbender of g.i. joe and more!

More seriously, she talks about how life can get in the way of monthly art challenges, but how that has its own wonderful results, and the plans she would make and steps she would take to make future Inktobers easier and even more fun.

Watch me ink with a dip pen, hear me talk about redesigning characters for a different time period, Ancient Rome, and see me fail miserably, not once but twice, at creating a background for this artwork. The good news is, I do get it eventually.

An occasional series featuring Shell Presto's redesigns of public domain characters. In this first drawing in the series, she takes a stab at Dejah Thoris from the John Carter of Mars series. Her first appearance was in A Princess of Mars, serialized in 1912 in All-Story Magazine. Presto talks about character design, staying true to the original feel of the character and the text, and coloring in Photoshop. She also discusses what the public domain is, and why it's a good source for your own creative ideas.

Like many of Shell's drawings, this has ties back to her work on her books in the Ascension Epoch universe. Learn more about the books I've co-written and illustrated, as well as the Ascension Epoch in general, here: https://www.ascensionepoch.com

Join Shell Presto as she draws the Drawlloween prompt, The Haunted HardDrive, for her first day of Inktober.

She'll discuss which prompts she'll be using and why, how she comes up with an idea, and describe how sometimes the drawing will tell you its story as you draw it.

This drawing has nothing to do with the Ascension Epoch books (YET!), but if you'd like to learn more about the books I've co-written and illustrated, as well as the Ascension Epoch in general, here:

It should be The Haunted Hard Drive, two words. I was a copy editor for 7 years, so I had to point that out.

Join Shell Presto as she paints a background for a drawing of Atomic Ranger standing at a lonely, above-ground subway station. She paints it using gouache, which is quite the experiment since it's her first time using gouache.

She'll discuss which gouache qualities led her to choose the brand she did, how M. Graham gouache behaves, doing a glow effect, and using a ruler while painting.

Like many of Shell's drawings, this has ties back to her work on her books in the Ascension Epoch universe. Learn more about the books I've co-written and illustrated, as well as the Ascension Epoch in general, here:

Join Shell Presto as she draws a giant group shot of the Challenger Foundation paying tribute to Jack Kirby's Fantastic Four number 82.

She'll discuss how to choose which comic book cover to pay homage to, using the grid method to stay on track, the pitfalls and what to watch out for. She also talks about how homage covers can help you market to your target audience when selling work with original characters.

My first collaboration! Woot!

Colin Richards of Markers and Monsters and I draw some lineart and swap it for coloring. We're doing characters from Rogue One, the latest of the Star Wars films, and I can certainly say it's a blast.

Watch me pencil and ink Admiral Raddus and color Grand Moff Tarkin, then head to Markers and Monsters to see Colin do the reverse here:

Shell Presto draws and colors Sailor Mars from the Sailor Moon anime in Clip Studio Paint, aka Manga Studio. Hear her thoughts on the watercolor brush in the digital painting program, and a bit about drawing fanart in general. She also reminisces about Sailor Moon and anime in the '90s.

The video home of artist Shell Presto DiBaggio.

I draw, color, and paint, both on paper and on the computer. You can watch me, and maybe pick up some tips along the way. I'll show you everything I do from pencils to inks, from watercolors to markers (Copics being my favorite), from Post-it Note drawings to full comic pages. And I'll talk about my experiences as an artist, both professional and personal.

You can visit AscensionEpoch.com to see more of my art (as well as my writing).
