shellpresto

An occasional series featuring Shell Presto's redesigns of public domain characters. In this first drawing in the series, she takes a stab at Dejah Thoris from the John Carter of Mars series. Her first appearance was in A Princess of Mars, serialized in 1912 in All-Story Magazine. Presto talks about character design, staying true to the original feel of the character and the text, and coloring in Photoshop. She also discusses what the public domain is, and why it's a good source for your own creative ideas.

Like many of Shell's drawings, this has ties back to her work on her books in the Ascension Epoch universe. Learn more about the books I've co-written and illustrated, as well as the Ascension Epoch in general, here: https://www.ascensionepoch.com

Join Shell Presto as she draws the Drawlloween prompt, The Haunted HardDrive, for her first day of Inktober.

She'll discuss which prompts she'll be using and why, how she comes up with an idea, and describe how sometimes the drawing will tell you its story as you draw it.

This drawing has nothing to do with the Ascension Epoch books (YET!), but if you'd like to learn more about the books I've co-written and illustrated, as well as the Ascension Epoch in general, here:

It should be The Haunted Hard Drive, two words. I was a copy editor for 7 years, so I had to point that out.

Join Shell Presto as she paints a background for a drawing of Atomic Ranger standing at a lonely, above-ground subway station. She paints it using gouache, which is quite the experiment since it's her first time using gouache.

She'll discuss which gouache qualities led her to choose the brand she did, how M. Graham gouache behaves, doing a glow effect, and using a ruler while painting.

Like many of Shell's drawings, this has ties back to her work on her books in the Ascension Epoch universe. Learn more about the books I've co-written and illustrated, as well as the Ascension Epoch in general, here:

Join Shell Presto as she draws a giant group shot of the Challenger Foundation paying tribute to Jack Kirby's Fantastic Four number 82.

She'll discuss how to choose which comic book cover to pay homage to, using the grid method to stay on track, the pitfalls and what to watch out for. She also talks about how homage covers can help you market to your target audience when selling work with original characters.

My first collaboration! Woot!

Colin Richards of Markers and Monsters and I draw some lineart and swap it for coloring. We're doing characters from Rogue One, the latest of the Star Wars films, and I can certainly say it's a blast.

Watch me pencil and ink Admiral Raddus and color Grand Moff Tarkin, then head to Markers and Monsters to see Colin do the reverse here:

Shell Presto draws and colors Sailor Mars from the Sailor Moon anime in Clip Studio Paint, aka Manga Studio. Hear her thoughts on the watercolor brush in the digital painting program, and a bit about drawing fanart in general. She also reminisces about Sailor Moon and anime in the '90s.

The video home of artist Shell Presto DiBaggio.

I draw, color, and paint, both on paper and on the computer. You can watch me, and maybe pick up some tips along the way. I'll show you everything I do from pencils to inks, from watercolors to markers (Copics being my favorite), from Post-it Note drawings to full comic pages. And I'll talk about my experiences as an artist, both professional and personal.

You can visit AscensionEpoch.com to see more of my art (as well as my writing).
