That Hiking Guy

love to Winter Camp in my Truck and one of the obstacles to doing so is how to stay warm in the back while sleeping. In this video, I talk about my method for staying warm and also discuss some more budget-friendly ways. This is just the method that I have found to be the most useful thus far,. It is not intended to be the only method to stay warm. I am definitely open to other ways and if you know of any please leave them in the comments below. Staying warm while sleeping is the difference between being really comfortable while truck camping and being miserable.

Wow, it only cost $5 to camp overnight at Saddle Lake in the Hoosier National Forest. Saddle Lake is located near Tell City Indiana. It has 13 spots and is a first-come, first-served type campground. You pay a fee and find an open spot. Saddle Lake itself is very tiny but there is lots of beautiful space around it. The trail is actually 2.4 miles and goes all the way around the lake in a loop. Very easy hike and very enjoyable. My original plan was to head over to Illinois to Shawnee National Forest to camp one night over there and hike a couple of trails however due to the forecast I did not have it in me to endure 12 hours of rain again. I will head over to Illinois very soon.

I got to attend the Ohio Youtuber Meetup and boy am I glad I did. I got to meet so many new people who love the outdoors. With and without a channel on Youtube. I also got to meet one of my favorite backpackers: David Gray. He is from Indiana as well and I started watching him a long time ago. All in all, I would estimate there were about 30 people there but there is no real accurate count. This meetup started as a simple idea to camp with other outdoor channels, talk about gear, life, and Youtube around a campfire. It has grown to include subscribers and just about anyone else who wants to attend. I am glad I went this year and plan to go back next year. One of the best things about this meetup is being able to meet not only people who you have followed for a long time but also to discover new channels and people may be just starting out sharing their adventures. The temps got down into the low 20s at one point and it was very cold but we had a constant campfire going so that helped. People brought their tents and hammocks and cooked food over the campfire.

It had been a while since I had visited one of Indiana's finest state parks: Turkey Run State Park. On this day, I did a day hike with a friend on trail 6 and 7. This video is highlights from that hike and shows the beauty of the canyons. If you have never been to Turkey Run, I highly recommend it. There is plenty to do there camping, hiking, kayaking, and the Inn is one of the most beautiful ones in the state.

The weatherman said it would be 22 degrees at night so I decided that would be a good test of my winter loadout. I headed back to the Deam for a Solo Overnight Hammock Camp. Because it gets dark now at 5:30 pm that meant I was going to be doing some night hiking. I had a great time on my own and got to see some beautiful fall colors again. The peace and quiet were welcome as well.

Last weekend, I went truck camping in my Toyota Tundra. The problem was that rain was forecast at 100% for 12 hours! That makes for some challenging camping. The temps were in the low 50s and at night got down to about 40s. We started the trip with 7 people reporting they were going to show up, and we ended up with 3 of us. My friend John became ill and ended up having to go home. That left 2 of us to ride out the storm. On Sunday, the rain cleared up and we had a great morning to pack up and have some coffee. Overall it was a great trip. I filmed this entire trip on my iPhone 8.

Another great trip with equally great camping friends. This time I was joined by three other people as we camped for two nights in the Hoosier National Forest at Charles C. Deam Wilderness. During the trip, I got out my DJI Spark to capture some cinematic type shots. I used my Big Agnes Copper Spur UL 1 tent this time to switch things up from hammock to tent. We had a great couple of nights at Terrell Pond and got some much-needed relaxation in.

A few years ago, I backed a project on Kickstarted called the One80 Light. It was an innovative product which was the brainchild of two outdoor enthusiasts, so I was immediately drawn to it. They were rethinking how we think about headlamps and I wanted in. Fast forward to a few years later and one of the owners/creators of the company contacted me to see if I wanted to try out their latest waterproof version which also has a red light bar that can be attached. I jumped at the chance. In this video, I give my initial thoughts on their newest iteration of this awesome headlamp.
Some of the stats on this product are:

H2 Headlamp
IPX7 Waterproof
Rechargeable
360 Lumens (on high)
Weighs 4 0z
180-degree visibility.

One of the final pieces to add to my Toyota Tundra overlanding truck camper is the Roadshower 4. I got this because it is very convenient when you are on a road trip to have a quick shower and to spray off your gear. This model holds 7 gallons of water. I also ordered the flexible gooseneck nozzle to be able to feel like a real shower. In this video, I am testing out the shower and explaining some of the features of it.

I found this product at Walmart while I was supplying for a recent trip. I was intrigued by its design and decided to give it a try. This UCO Switch Spork is very handy and light and I really like it. In this video, I am lightly comparing it to my Morspel Spork that I got off of Kickstarter. The thing I like about the UCO is the ability to break it down into a smaller footprint in my backpack. Don't get me wrong I still like the Morsel, but there are some advantages to this spork that the Morsel does not have.

Measurements: 7 inches nested, 10.3 inches extended
Weighs: 0.9 oz or 27 grams
Includes 1 reusable tether, 1 fork, and 1 spoon/knife combination utensil.
Made from ultra-durable food grade BPA-free glass-filled nylon.
Use the spoon and fork separately or connect them together end to end for extra length.
Attachment points and reusable tether work together to affix the spork to a pack or hang it up to dry.
Dishwasher and microwave safe

Welcome to episode 2 of the THG podcast (still exclusive to youtube). In this episode, I interview Keith Williams of the Trailmedic Youtube channel. Keith was one of the first channels I started watching to get a sense of what trails there were in Indiana to explore and I really liked his down to earth style of filming. His passion for the outdoors really shows in his videos. His videos were very useful to me in figuring out what Indiana had to offer with regards to backpacking, camping, and hiking. You can find his channel at this link: https://www.youtube.com/user/TrailMed...

In the future, I will be interviewing more Indiana Hikers, Backpackers and Campers. I want to highlight all the great people that enjoy the outdoors and love hearing their stories about how they got started.

I could not let 2018 say goodbye before getting out for one more short overnighter to do some winter hammock camping. The location we chose is the Charles C. Deam Wilderness in the Hoosier National Forest. The HNF is one of my favorite places to hike, backpack, and camp in Indiana. It is also one of the places not really affected by the current partial government shutdown. On this trip, I opted for the Dream Hammock Raven paired with my Hammock Gear 20 degree under quilt, and zero degrees top quilt. I was also out testing my DJI Osmo Pocket and my new GoPro Hero Black 7. Both are pretty awesome to film with. My buddy John was using his Alps Mountaineering one man tent and he really liked it. The location we chose to camp in this round was a frog pond located just off the Terrill ridge trail.

In this first episode of the podcast, I interview Brian Carlson from Carlson Adventures on YouTube. I will be doing more of these interviews with Indiana hikers, campers, backpackers so stay tuned.

Recently I saw a video from a channel called Primal Outdoors which is one of my favorite outdoor channels on YouTube. In the video, he discussed an ongoing problem with backpacking or camping in the public lands. The problem is a large amount of trash being left out at campsites. In this video, I explain two pieces of essential gear that you should always take with you to help combat this problem. Also in this video, I mention two of my favorite outdoor companies.

Let's be honest, this summer has been a scorcher. It has kept a lot of us from getting out there and doing things outside. In my quest to find a solution for truck camping in the heat, I came across a couple of fans that might be useful for using with a battery system to keep the air moving in the back of the truck at night. In this video, I discuss several factors that went into my decision to create my current system. I am not an expert on batteries or electrical calculations and have very little experience with both. I think this system will work out pretty well for me. As always, please do more research for your own system.
