Side note - Although, naturally, I still have some concerns with and take issue with the Canadian soldier, I'm far more upset with the justice system and the Canadian military than I am with the actual offender. I know that might seem strange to say, but the whole ordeal, from beginning to end, was extremely perplexing where I was left wondering how it is, in the first place, that the military could be employing someone with recent prior criminal conviction(s), evidenced by the one criminal charge that he was actually convicted of (breach) and someone who was subsequently as mentally/emotionally unstable as he was. Also, why was he allegedly dishonorably discharged from the military but not convicted in criminal court?
Then there as the questions surrounding the actual justice system that covered it all up in the long run. How could the courts hold him in jail for so long, based on the evidence, and then one arbitrary trial judge comes along and exonerates the guy. I always wondered why one would chose to convince a judge, one person only, of their innocence, as opposed to a jury of their peers, but when I factor in potential clandestine affiliations and obligations, that option seems a bit more appealing, after all.
From my perspective, we do have to get dangerous offenders off the streets and get them the rehabilitative supports and resources that they obviously require. To me, justice is not a simple process of locking someone up and throwing away the key. When the justice system is a broken as it is, it takes a vigilant populace to ensure that offenders are receiving the necessary rehabilitative services required instead of relying on twisted penal system that does nothing but harden already traumatized people into even further difficult situations that only perpetuate the social madness.
The military and the court system not only perpetuate the madness, they tend to generate a significant amount of it and that's where the actual problem rests, from my perspective. As I see it, in the absence of accountable public servants and regulated professionals, such social madness can only continue!
