The Indianapolis 500 is a car race that has been thrilling crowds since 1911. The number 500 comes from the 500 miles traveled during the 200 laps of the race. It’s an event steeped in tradition and one that continues to captivate millions of eyeballs when it runs each year.

In 1939, photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt was assigned to cover the event by LIFE Magazine. He took a series of photos that wonderfully captured the time period, the high octane risk, and the wide variety of fans and spectators.
