Abuse in William Branham's Cult of Personality
William Branham was a strong advocate for corporal punishment, and when that wasn’t “enough”, Branham advocated for harsh physical abuse. Worse, he left much to the imagination, resulting in several members turning to emotional, physical, and even sexual abuse to show dominance. Combine that with the misogynistic doctrines — fundamental to his cult theology — and you have the perfect recipe for disaster.
According to Branham, the female half of the human race was designed by Satan to deceive, and should they fall out of line, Branham claimed the male half was “not much of a man” if they did not “take a board and blister her with it”. Branham introduced theology labeling women as the lowest form of animal in creation, lower than a dog or a hog. As such, according to Branham’s theology, they must be treated like animals to be kept in line. Branham went so far as to praise cult members who stripped children and beat the flesh until the child could not put their clothes back on due to the mutilation of the flesh.
As members of Braham's cult of personality escape, many of those who suffered abuse have formed support groups and awareness groups to help other victims. One such awareness group is castingpearlsproject.com. Several brave women have gone public with their stories to help others who have shared similar experiences. There are also books published that document the abuse in the cult. Deborah Thibodeau’s book “The Serpent’s Tail” documents the brutal beatings and abuse of children in a Branham cult commune in Arizona led by two members of Branham’s campaign team, Gene Goad and Leo Mercier.
