The Italian composer and priest Claudio Montiverdi most likely completed his first book of Canzonettas in 1584 at the age of 17. At the time, Montiverdi was a student of Marc’Antonio Ingegneri, the maestro di cappella at the Cremona Cathedral in Lombardy.

A canzonetta is secular song usually sung in three voices, but would develop through the second half of the 16th Century to include additional voices, and would also be used as accompaniments to dances, and ironically for music to accompany sacred text.
