"Accelerationism" is the idea that the way to overcome neoliberal capitalism is to push it to its most extreme point, to exacerbate its tensions and contradictions and hidden tendencies, in the hope that this will lead it to explode and open up a way beyond it. The idea of accelerationism has its roots in traditional Marxist theory, but it was explicitly formulated in French radical thought of the 1960s and 1970s, and has entered theoretical debates on the Left only in the last decade or two. My talk will discuss the history, and the various formulations, of accelerationism both as a political strategy and as an aesthetic tendency, and offer thoughts both on the limitations of the concept, and on why it is nonetheless important to think about.
Co-sponsored by the GVSU Brooks College of Interdisciplinary Studies, the School of Communications, the Office for Public Culture, and the Philosophy Department.
