When Jesus said to take up your cross and follow me, He was not talking about tolerating your sufferings in life. He had a completely different meaning, as you can see by paying attention to the context in Matthew 10:32-40.
He said that he who seeks to gain his life will lose it and he who loses his life for Christ's sake will gain it. He who loses his life will gain it. He is talking as He usually does about governance of the life. Who is running your life, determining what is done from day to day? Are you governing your life or is the LORD? That is what determines whether you have lost your life for Christ's sake or you have tried to find your life. If you are governing your own life you will lose your life.
