What is Repentance?
Jesus said in Luke 5:32 "I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."
In the salvific sense of the Gospel true Repentance (Greek. metanoia, lit., “change of mind”) refers to the conviction that precedes genuine faith in Christ. The preaching of repentance clearly ought to accompany the proclamation of the gospel (see. Acts 3:19 and 2nd Timothy 2:25)
Conviction always precedes genuine faith and Christ and what separates the testimonies of true Christians and False "Christians". A true Christian saw his sinful condition and confessed his sinful state before God asking to be set free and saved by the blood of Jesus. Evangelical Repentance is not sorrow for what you've done, its sorrow for what you are.
Dr. Jack Hyles 100% correctly and Biblically states concerning repentance...
“Repentance is not some little silly, 'I'm sorry.' Repentance is not simply a fear of God. Repentance is not a monk fasting and afflicting his body in a monastery. Repentance is not remorse because of sin's consequences. Repentance is not penance performed before the pope as you kiss his toe... Repentance is not being sorry for what I've done wrong. It is not confessing one's sins to a priest. It is not just conviction of sin. It is not the signing of a pledge of abstinence. Repentance is that thing when you come before God and see yourself as you are, and see Him as he is, and say with Isaiah 'Woe is me, for I am unclean!'” —Pastor Jack Hyles (1926-2001), a quote from the timeless sermon, THE GOODNESS OF GOD LEADETH TO REPENTANCE!
A true Christian believes on Jesus upon recognizing their sinful condition. A false "Christian" thinks his religion, his church, his baptism, his good works, ect,ect can save him. However the Bible says in Isaiah 64:6 "But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away." proving anyone attempting to save themselves by their own righteousness apart from Christ is an unsaved Pharisee who still needs to repent.
Repentance is a gift, a beautiful gift from the Holy Spirit.
John 16:8-10 King James Version (KJV)
"And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: Of sin, because they believe not on me; Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;"
A gospel without conviction (ie. repentance) is watered down and is no gospel at all! In order to truly be saved, you must first know why you need to be saved. You are a sinner and you cannot save yourself by your works, you deserve to go to Hell, hense you must trust in Jesus Christ the savior who died, bled was buried and was resurrected all on your behalf. You are a guilty sinner and your own righteousness will not get you into Heaven.
"But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." —Matthew 6:33
Old time Bible preacher Harry Ironsides put it this way "No one was ever saved in any dispensation excepting by grace. Neither sacrificial observances, nor ritual service, nor works of law ever had any part in justifying the ungodly. Nor were any sinners ever saved by grace until they repented. Repentance is not opposed to grace; it is the recognition of the need of grace." Jesus said in Luke 15:10 "Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth." So my friend if you are unsaved and are reading this description or you watched this video.
I urge you to do what Mark 1:15 says "And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel."
How to get saved-Gospel Presentation:
Man is a sinner in the eyes of a Holy God.
Romans 3:23 – For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.
There is a price for our sin, the wage (what we earn) is death when we sin.
Romans 6:23 – For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Jesus Christ paid for all our sins, by dying on the cross, shedding His blood; Christ was buried and bodily rose again 3 days later.
Romans 5:8 – But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
By faith in Jesus Christ alone are we saved forever.
Ephesians 2:8 – For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Faith alone in Christ alone. That is the gospel, it is simple, pure and it saves you eternally. You cannot lose salvation.
Do you trust that Jesus Christ is God come in the flesh? That He died for all your sins on the cross? That He was buried and 3 days later rose from the dead? If you do, you are now saved.
