Haydn completed this symphony in 1762 as part of his duties for the court of Prince Esterházy Paul II Anton at the Eisenstadt Palace. The Trio section of the third movement demonstrates an early example of syncopation.

This symphony is comprised of four movements:
I. Adagio cantabile
II. Allegro
III. Menuetto con Trio
IV. Presto
