Chopin completed a pair of nocturnes in 1836, with both being published together in 1837. Until this point, Chopin had composed nocturnes in groups off three, however the new format of a contrasting pair would be so popular he would use this format for the remaining nocturnes he would publish during his lifetime.

This pair would be dedicated to the Countess d’Appony, the wife of the Austrian ambassador to France.
