Schumann completed this overture in 1851, with the premiere performance being given the same year in Dusseldorf. The work is meant as an overture based on the play “The Bride of Messina” by German playwright Friedrich Schiller.

The overture was not well received by the public, with the Dusseldorf Director of Music terminating the city’s contract with Schumann after the premiere.
