Eikonos - Big Ship (Cardiacs cover, in memory of Tim Smith)
A visualization-video for Eikonos Cardiacs-cover 'Big Ship', in memory of Tim Smith.
Some 15 years ago I was a mid-20's musician & music nerd. I had basically worn out my collection of Mr. Bungle-, Zappa-, Beefheart-, Mats/Morgan- and similar albums when a close friend of mine introduced me to Cardiacs. Well, I say "introduce".. In our regular online chat, he simply sent me an unknown mp3 that he had come across on some obscure forum.
Naturally curious and without further information on what I had stumbled upon, I clicked it, and Angleworm Angel started playing. As the intro guitar-riff filled the air, I was in love. Never have I fallen in love with anything (or anyone) that fast, not before nor after, but I knew this was it. Three seconds in I knew I loved this band. Blown away by their unique sound, amazed at their complex and creative compositional style and just plain happy to have stumbled upon something that I knew would impact and inspire me for the rest of my life.
Many years have passed since then, and I can not express how glad I am to have stumbled over Tim & Cardiacs all those years ago. I am still an active musician and after listening to the Cardiacs discography for these last few weeks, it is 'painfully' obvious to me how much their music has actually impacted me. There are Cardiacs-traces all over pretty much every single recording I've ever done.
Since his passing I've visited the Tim-related Facebook pages quite often, reading other people's stories on how he's impacted their lives, seeing other artists paying tribute by playing covers, etc. I've very much enjoyed the piano adaptations of his songs, if you haven't seen or heard any, you definitely should search youtube when you're having a slow day..
With 2020 being the trainwreck that it is, it's nice & somewhat comforting to see that people are still taking the time to come together to celebrate and enjoy the things we are left with in this world, Tim's music is one of those things. In the spirit of sharing memories and music, here's my contribution;
