Howard Roark, an honest man and individualistic architect who chooses to struggle in obscurity rather than compromise his artistic and personal vision, fights to design modern architecture despite resistance from the traditionally minded architectural establishment. Roark's complex relationships with other individuals assist or hinder his progress, with romantic melodrama and personal, ethical, and industrial deception and intrigue along the way. Based on Ayn Rand's novel (who also wrote the screenplay), Roark represents Rand's embodiment of the human spirit, and his struggle represents the eternal struggle between individualism and integrity against collectivism and servitude.
