Haydn completed this symphony in 1763 as part of his contract with Prince Nikolaus Esterházy, and the estate in Eisenstadt. An original copy of the manuscript drafted by Haydn is stored in the Budapest library, providing certainty with the date of composition as well as the instrumentation.

This symphony is comprised of four movements:
I. Allegro molto
II. Adagio cantabile
III. Menuet & Trio
IV. Finale: Allegro molto
