Virginia's Board of Elections' website repeatedly melted down Tuesday evening, just as election returns were supposed to be flowing in from boards of elections across the commonwealth.
As the first results were posted, every table on the site indicated that 100% of precincts were reporting, despite just a smattering of results. Then what looked to users like couple of consecutive reboots of their system knocked users to error pages with no results so far. The error said, "Due to unforeseen circumstances we are unable to process your request at this time. If you have any questions or concerns please contact us."
The Board of Elections also tweeted its apologies for the glitch, but those who responded were brutal, with quips, digs and even a winking photo of Vladimir Putin.

The problem was identified within the first half-hour of voting, according to Piper. But any votes cast will count in those races, as they did in 2017, and Piper estimated a full accounting could take “weeks to months.” "The fact that they ran out of ballots at all, much less that it happened at 8 a.m. when the polling station had been open for only two hours, was a source of frustration for many," James Nachman is chair of the Richmond Electoral board not Virginia Board of Elections.
