Quis dabit oculis by Costanzo Festa

The Italian composer Costanzo Festa was born in approximately 1485 in the town of Piedmont near Turin. Little is known about the early life of this composer, other than that his musical education was not provided through service as a monk to the church (early documents which refer to Festa use the term ‘clericis secularibus’ – secular clergy). The earliest work of Festa’s with a confirmed date of composition is his ‘Quis dabit oculis’. This motet for four voices was composed in 1514 on the occasion of the death of Anne of Brittany. Anne was the Duchess of Brittany from 1488, Queen consort of German from 1490 to 1492 and later Queen consort of France from 1491 to 1504.

To be given the opportunity to provide a mourning song on behalf of Anne of Brittany shows Festa must have already had an established talent in composition, however currently it is not possible to confirm any works by Festa completed before 1514.

There are no confirmed paintings or sketches of Festa done during his lifetime. The cover image for this video is ‘The Fire in the Borgo’ by the Italian artiest Raphael, completed in approximately 1517. The image you see during the video is an early illumination of sheet music by Festa, painted in approximately 1538.
