It was not that long ago that a device like this would not have been available in the amateur market and professionals been charged several hundred pounds for it. Now the same thing can be bought here for less than £20. I must be getting old. At about the size of a small TV remote, a size you can easily pop into a top pocket, you have a laser tape measure, rangefinder, laser pointer and cat teaser all in one.
The unit was supplied in a rather old-fashioned looking but robust cardboard box, a nice pleasant change from the usual annoying blister packs. Inside the box, aside from the laser device itself, was a soft carry case, lanyard strap (prefitted), batteries and a User Guide rather too big for the box. The User Guide was well written, nicely printed and easy to read, a real change from the offerings we are usually expected to use. I append a scan of the full User Guide to my unboxing video. The build quality of the unit was good, all of plastic but nicely made. The candy bar design of the device looked a bit dated for me, I would have favoured a less angular look and a colour LCD screen but that, I suppose, would add to the cost.
Using the device could not be more simple. After turning it on just point at the wall or object you select and press the centre button once to turn on the laser and again to take the reading, after a few milliseconds the distance comes up on the easy to read backlit screen. However, that is just the start of what this device can do. It can determine Single-distance Measurement, Continuous Measurement, Area Calculation, Volume Calculation & Indirect Pythagoras Measurement using the 20 step internal memory. It can give results in Imperial or Metric units. The device has a tiny spirit level built in to ensure correct orientation but this is far too small and hard to see to be of much use.
This device is not perfect. It has some minor shortfalls and omissions which I list below but what you get for the price still justifies a top rating ..
