Spring Song, Op. 16 by Jean Sibelius

Sibelius completed this short work for orchestra in 1894 under the name ‘Improvisation for Orchestra’. The premiere performance was given in July the same year at an outdoor festival in the Finnish city of Vaasa. The work was received with only moderate enthusiasm, as the quiet nature of the work was not well suited to the outdoor festival. Sibelius revised the work in 1895, changing the key from D major to F major and renaming the work to ‘Spring Song’. This new version had a premiere in April of 1895 in Helsinki.

The work is comprised of a single movement.
