Lecture 20: In this last lecture, we traced the origins of Buddhism in 6th-century India and saw how it was gradually transformed from a philosophy into a religion. During the first two centuries of the Common Era, Buddhist monks and merchants spread their new Mahayana version of the faith as they moved into Central and East Asia along the Silk Roads. In this lecture, we’ll follow the spread of Buddhism into China, which after the fall of the Han dynasty entered another cycle of fragmentation and conflict. In this Age of Disunity, Buddhism emerged as a genuine alternative to Confucianism and Daoism, offering the people of China new hope for salvation.
