William Branham Speaking in Tongues

In some versions of William Branham's stage persona, Branham took a strong position against the Pentecostal Assemblies claiming that he did not believe that speaking in tongues was evidence of the Holy Spirit. Other versions, even during the same month of this declaration, strongly affirmed his position that he believed speaking in tongues was the evidence of the Holy Spirit. William Branham's stage personas argued against themselves on the issue. At one point Branham vehemently denied having ever held this position.

For the versions that claimed to believe in tongues as the evidence, Branham pretended to speak in tongues, saying the words “jumalan rauhaa” and “Kiitos Jesus”. After saying the words, Branham asked the audience, “What was I saying?” In 1951, eight years prior, Branham admitted that he knew these phrases and frequently mentioned them in his sermons, and first used the words in 1950. In August of 1950 in Cleveland, Branham explained what the phrase meant to his audience.
