Shostakovich completed his piano concerto no. 2 in 1957, with the premiere being given at the Moscow Conservatory in the same year. The music was partially written with the intention to be easier for amateur pianists to play.
The work is comprised of three movements:
I. Allegro
II. Andante
III. Allegro

The work received a generally positive response, and has since become a concerto performed regularly throughout the world.
